Creating jobs

Recommended Posts

You know its funny how presidential candidates always talk about creating jobs when in fact the president cant really create jobs, except for govt jobs. The economy creates jobs through the basic working of capitalism, and the president can do nothing about it. In fact legilsators are the ones that make the decisions that affewct the economy, and in turn the economy creates the job. Neither bush nor kerry will create jobs unless if they expand the govt.

Yeah, except when the say "creating jobs", they're talking about creating the economic conditions for creating jobs. I thought you were smart enough to know that. (but then again, you are a Republican :D ) In those respects, Bush has failed this country like no other since Herbert Hoover. Even in wartime, FDR managed to keep the economy moving (granted, most of the economy was focused on the war).

Fact: on the eve of FDR's inauguration, 25% of Americans were out of work. More to the point, Hoover was seen as uncaring and sympathetic to monied interests. He didn't act for much of his presidency, and when he did, he gave the US the Smoot-Hawley tariff and the NRA (National Recovery Act), both of which caused the depression to worsen in terms of isolationism and inefficient government. A sense of optimism and a feeling of "we can do better" goes a long way. Hoover did not have either, and neither does Bush.

You're actually wrong, the term 'creating jobs' is a political eupehmeism to fool people into voting for you. In fact the president does not create jobs or economic policy. He can propose policies to congress, and using popularity and such can influence the vote, but legislation is what passes economic policy, the influence an economic policy has on the economy does not come into affect until many years after it is passed. Meaning what Hoover did in 1929 did not affect anything until around 1932. Presidents always say 'grow the economy' and 'create jobs' which are two political terms to fool the simple minded. The president can influence the former but does not really do any of the two. And im a libertarian by the way. FDR did more to hurt future economies than anything that actually alleviated the depression. The small prewar economic upswing was due to hoover's reforms and the full economic lift occured only because of the war. In fact had the war not happened at all FDR would today be seen as perhaps the worst president in history.

Just like entitlements, we're never going to be rid of them no matter how useless. We need to work on reforming them so we stop wasting so much money on them
