Coast Guard Searching For Boat Missing In Path Of Hurricane

POSTED: 10:25 am EDT September 3, 2004

MIAMI -- The U.S. Coast Guard was searching Friday for a 33-foot Fort Lauderdale-bound pleasure boat that made a distress call about 12 miles west of Bimini, Bahamas, in eight-foot seas churned up by Hurricane Frances.

Three people were reported to be aboard the boat, which left Thursday from Bimini. Someone on the boat made the distress call at 9 p.m. Thursday to report that they were disabled, Petty Officer Anastasia Burns said.

The boat was registered in the United States, but Burns didn't know where the people were from.

"It's pretty rough out there," Burns said. "We're doing the best we can to search for these people."

A Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Miami and a Hercules C-130 airplane from Air Station Clearwater were searching for the vessel, Burns said.

"We want to warn mariners against running from the storm," she said. "At this point, if your vessel is not moved, just tie it down the best you can."
