October 7, 200422 yr I think what Mollusk is saying is that the sanctions were keeping Saddam from getting WMDs which was the point of going to war, thus, that trumps all. 585530 If so, then I'm compelled to ask the (as yet unanswered) question again - how do you explain the WMD group's budget increase from ~$7M in 1998 to over $200M in 2001? "Sanctions" that allow for a WMD budget increase of over 3000% doesn't strike me as being describable by the word "working". If you feel otherwise, feel free to explain of course. 585534 It seems to equal nothing since we found nothing. If he spent that money we should have found facilities, or traces of something yet we found nothing. I have always thought Saddam was putting up a front to make it seem that he was up to something fishy so the US/UN would storm on in and find nothing and they look like they were wrong. As if he was some martyr of sorts. So yes his spending went up, but where did it go? We know it couldn't have been weaspons, there are none.
October 7, 200422 yr And the convoys to Syria our sattelites saw right before the war were moving scrap iron and cotton bales right? Have you ever known someone who was going to have a car repo'd? Ever watch the convoluted things they do to keep the repo man from finding it? 585538 Well if Bush wanted to get those WMDs, and he thinks that is what they are, why didn't he stick to his convictions and hunt those weapons down? What is he waiting for? Lets go get them!!! Oh wait... he must be a flip-flopper too. "Well darn it d***.... they moved dem dere weapons away. I guess we should just be invadin' anyway huh? Yea, lets nation build, I don't think an army should be used for that. Oh Osama? pssssh, who cares about him, daddy told me 10 years ago Saddam is the bad man... mmm I'm hungry... have a banana?"

Wasted rescources..bad priorities.
October 7, 200422 yr Suppose you're Saddam and you want the sanctions lifted. Do you BOOST your WMD budget or LOWER it to zero? BOOSTING it will certainly raise eyebrows and invite even closer scrutiny and extend the sanctions even longer. Why would Saddam do this damage to himself? - that explanation makes no sense at all. Occam's razor suggests the most obvious - he was planning on ramping up. 585538 Like I said I don't think he wanted the sanctions lifted. I honestly think he thought he would do a lot of harm and to the UN if they invaded and found nothing. I think he was more than prepared to become a martyr, I honestly feel that. He was in a situation he couldn't win. Lay down and look weak to those who make up his community. Or make a last "stand" and embarress the US. I think Saddam is that coniving.
