Thief Steals 71-Year-Old Voter's ID

1 hour, 50 minutes ago Local - WPLG Click10.com

A 71-year-old woman was all set to vote for the very first time today when a thief changed her plans.

Essie Mae Hermitt had been unable to vote because she was unable to read. She was ready to go to the polls this morning after a local church educated her about the issues and voting. But when Hermitt went to vote, the car she was in was broken into when she stopped at a Miami restaurant with a friend. Her identification in her pocketbook was taken in the burglary.

While her situation seemed fairly dire, the Local 10 Problem Solvers stepped in to help. They urged Hermitt to return home to find any form of ID she could find. She found her birth certificate after searching a safe-deposit box.

Using that identification, she was able to vote at her precinct in northwest Miami-Dade County.

"I finally got to vote after 71 years," Hermitt exclaimed. "I thank the Lord. And I thank everybody for helping me."

Miami police are actively searching for the robbers who stole Hermitt's pocketbook. Local 10 News will have more on her story coming up tonight at 5 p.m.

I'm guessing all of her ID was stolen (voter's card, license, etc.)

Just came back from the polls. We had to show photo id, sign our name next to our address, and show the voter's registration card.

I had to show my driver's license and voter registration card.

i had to say my last night and sign next to my full name .. i had my card and other stuff with me, it just didn't come into play

No, but in order to enter the precinct I had to show ID, my parents had to sign and show registration.

Oh alright.

I voted early, didn't have to show voter's card but did so anyways.

I know a few people in North Carolina today who voted. One person said all she did was tell them her name and she could go in and vote. That is freakin ridiculous. Others I know had to show ID and recite the address.

We were made to show ID to enter the polling place if you got into the line. (I got in the line to see my mom vote) Even little ones had to show their school IDs.
