Quite a few minor league signings

Featured Replies

Marlins signed RHP Frank Castillo to a minor league contract.

Probably the Marlins' best pickup of the day. Castillo doesn't have a lot left in the tank, but he can still be a decent sixth starter. He went 10-9 with a 4.38 ERA for Triple-A Pawtucket last season. Nov. 11 - 6:34 pm et

Marlins signed RHP Bryan Corey to a minor league contract.

Corey went to Japan in May and had a 5.48 ERA in 21 relief appearances for Yomiuri. He'll probably spend next year at Triple-A Albuquerque. Nov. 11 - 6:32 pm et

Marlins signed RHP Bart Miadich to a minor league contract.

Miadich, 28, had a 3.96 ERA while splitting time between the Triple-A clubs of San Diego and Texas last season. He'd be a successful big-league reliever right now if he had average command. He doesn't. Nov. 11 - 6:24 pm et

Marlins signed RHP Travis Smith to a minor league contract.

Smith had a 2.59 ERA in 107 2/3 IP with Triple-A Richmond and a 6.20 ERA in 40 2/3 IP with Atlanta last season. Having pitchers like him around should help the Marlins avoid calling up any more arms from Single-A next season. Still, he's not someone they'll want to use if they can help it. Marlins signed first baseman-outfielder Admin Barnes to a minor league contract.

Barnes will give MLB another try after hitting .252/.316/.411 in 34 games in Japan. He could be of some use as a pinch-hitter, but he's signing with a team that used Lenny Harris over the vastly superior Admin Sutton last year. Nov. 11 - 6:14 pm et

Marlins signed outfielder Mark Little to a minor league contract.

Little hit .314/.349/.556 in 68 games for Triple-A Buffalo last season. He'd be a better fifth outfielder than someone like Gerald Williams, but the Marlins will try to do better. Nov. 11 - 6:10 pm et

Marlins signed outfielder Chad Green and catcher Jason Hill to minor league contracts.

Green, drafted eighth overall by the Brewers in 1996, was out of baseball last season after hitting .252/.294/.395 for Triple-A Rochester in 2003. He won't be a candidate to win a spot on the Marlins. Hill should be a backup catcher at Triple-A Albuquerque. Nov. 11 - 6:08 pm et

Nothing major

but I like the sound of this Travis Smith guy. His AAA numbers are pretty sick. And Mark Little looks like he could be decent, same goes for Frank Castillo if we ever need a spot start or someone else in the pen.
