Marlins sign Travis Smith

Featured Replies

Free agent right-handed pitcher Travis Smith has signed a minor league contract with the Florida Marlins with an invitiation to spring training.

Smith pitched in 16 games for the Atlanta Braves in 2004, starting four games. He originally came up to Atlanta in late May when Horacio Ramirez went on the Disabled List. His Braves debut was a solid performance, although he lost the game to the Phillies allowing only two runs over six innings. At the time of his promotion, Smith ranked fourth in the International League in ERA with a 2.49 mark and ranked eighth with 44 strikeouts, leading Richmond in both categories.

Overall with Atlanta Smith had a 2-3 record, an ERA of 6.20, 48 hits in 40.2 innings pitched, 12 walks, and 26 strikeouts. With Richmond, the 32-year old went 10-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 20 games (19 starts), 98 hits in 107.2 innings, 26 walks, and 93 strikeouts.

Smith was drafted originally by the Brewers in the 19th ronud of the 1995 amateur draft. He made his major league debut with the Milwaukee in 1998 (1 game), and then spent time in the Astros and Cardinals systems before signing with the Braves last November.

With some of the "AAAA" players starting to sign, expect the Braves to look for a couple of players to help stock their Richmond roster for 2005.
