November 17, 200421 yr Author RADIO SHUFFLE: The Rays are expected to announce an agreement this week to broadcast their games on Clear Channel-owned WHNZ, 1250 AM next season. Operations would be handled by the Rays in-house, similar to how the Lightning and Bucs handle their radio broadcasts. The move apparently will mean the end of the Paul Olden-Charlie Slowes era in Rays radio. The contracts for both expire Monday, and neither has been asked back. Although no replacements have been announced, Rays TV pregame show host Todd Kalas is believed to be a candidate. http://sports.tbo.com/sports/MGB5UXT6I1E.html

November 23, 200421 yr Author 11/23/2004 11:43 AM ET Phillies broadcasts return to WPHT By Mike Gennaria / Special to MLB.com? ? The Phillies are proving that you can go home again -- at least to your radio home. The team announced on Tuesday that it has agreed to a five-year deal with Infinity Broadcasting, which means that the majority of Phillies games will be broadcast on 1210 AM, the station known as "The Big Talker." After a three-year absence, the club returns to the station that had been its flagship from 1991 to 2001. "We're pleased to return to WPHT 1210 and become a core programming element for them," said Rory McNeil, the Phillies' director of broadcasting and video services. "A primary broadcasting goal for us is to provide as much exposure as possible both inside and outside the marketplace, and returning to WPHT's 50,000-watt, clear-channel signal does that." The exception will be the team's Friday night games, which will air on fellow Infinity station WIP 610 AM. Both stations will air pre- and postgame shows. WPHT will carry all postseason games and 14 Spring Training contests, including the Phillies' Spring Training opener. "We are pleased to welcome the Phillies home to The Big Talker 1210 AM," said David Yadgaroff, vice president and general manager of the station. "Our history together is legendary, and we are confident our partnership will be as strong as our signal throughout the Delaware Valley." The Phillies also announced that their games will continue to be heard on their radio network of 23 affiliated stations, which broadcast beyond the greater Philadelphia region. Mike Gennaria is a contributor to MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs. http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/NASAp...s_phi&fext=.jsp Cape's Note: The reason WIP will air Friday games is because WPHT thinks it will do better with its Frank Sinatra show Friday with Frank than the Phillies games. Sad, ain't it?
November 24, 200421 yr Author Bonneville Says No To Nationals - 11/24 - DCRTV hears that Bonneville won't be carrying the Nationals. The firm had "at least two conversations" with Major League Baseball about airing DC's new team. But the price for the rights was too steep. Bonneville did seriously consider putting the Nationals on classical WGMS, with cross-marketing on sister stations all-news WTOP and "modern music" Z104. However, Bonneville was concerned that "core classical music listeners" wouldn't like sports on WGMS. MLB was interested in having the team on the WTOP network, but Bonneville brass wanted to keep non-stop news, traffic, and weather on 1500, 107.7, 820, and 104.3. The most likely Nationals radio candidate is Clear Channel, via WTEM, WWRC, and WTNT, our sources say..... http://dcrtv.com/
November 24, 200421 yr Author Will O's Owner Suck TV $$$ From DC Taxpayers? - 11/24 - A group of DC Council members is concerned that profits from a proposed Washington Nationals regional TV sports network will go largely to Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos. November 24, 200421 yr Author Nationals To Infinity? - 11/23 - Infinity snags the rights to the Philadelphia Phillies for talker WPHT (1210 AM), which can be heard in the DC-Baltimore area at night. So, does that mean Infinity is still in the running to pick up the rights for the Washington Nationals? Possibly for hot talk WJFK-FM? Or a new sports talk WARW? There had been talk that Infinity was cutting back its sports rights budget on a nationwide basis. Hmmm. More from Radio And Records..... http://dcrtv.com/
December 1, 200421 yr Author 11/30/2004 8:35 PM ET KCAL-TV steps up to the plate as the new home of the Los Angeles Dodgers Contract runs through 2013 season KCAL-TV (Channel 9) has dramatically strengthened its brand as the nation's leading local television broadcaster of professional sports by signing a longterm agreement to become the new home of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The announcement was made today by Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, Jr. and Don Corsini, President and General Manager, KCAL and KCBS (Channel 2). The eight-year contract will take effect at the beginning of the 2006 baseball season and grant KCAL 9 the exclusive local broadcast television rights to Dodgers games, excluding contests that are televised by Major League Baseball's national TV outlets. KCAL currently has an obligation to carry Anaheim Angels games through the 2005 baseball season. Corsini stated: "Now I know what it feels like to hit a grand slam. The members of our management team and the majority of our employees have worked in Southern California for most of their lives. We have rooted for the Dodgers for years, enjoyed their nine World Series appearances and had great respect for everything the team has done to reach out and form an incredibly strong bond with the community. "It is a dream come true for KCAL 9 to serve as the home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers, two of the most successful and beloved teams in the history of sports." KCAL 9 is currently in its 28th consecutive year as the broadcast television home of the Los Angeles Lakers and recently signed an extension with the winningest franchise in NBA history through the 2011-12 basketball season. Corsini continued: "We are looking forward to working with the McCourt family as they continue to lead the Dodgers franchise in a very positive direction. We are committed to being a proud partner in the Dodgers' future success and celebrating many milestones, including the team's 50th anniversary in Los Angeles during the 2007 season. Our unparalleled sports and news resources at KCAL 9 and CBS 2, plus cross-promotional opportunities with sister station KFWB (980 AM), the radio home of the Dodgers, will allow us to enjoy a very happy and mutually beneficial partnership with the Boys in Blue." "It's only appropriate that Los Angeles' No. 1 team will be spotlighted on the city's No. 1 local sports broadcaster," McCourt said. "Joining KCAL creates innumerable opportunities to promote the Dodgers at a level deserving of Los Angeles sports fans. Further, the union of the Dodgers and KCAL forges an even stronger synergistic relationship with our family of broadcast partners. We look forward to 2006 and an exciting, innovative new era in the way Los Angeles watches Dodger baseball." The winner of more local Emmy awards than any other station in the region over the past five years, KCAL 9 is the leading broadcaster of local news and sports programming in Southern California. KCAL 9 is the home of the nation's first three-hour, primetime local news broadcast and is the only Southern California station with daily newscasts at Noon, 2 and 3 p.m. Collectively, KCAL 9 and CBS 2 serve the Southland with more than 60 hours of live local news and sports news programming per week and more than 200 local and national sporting events each year. http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/NASApp/m...pr_la&fext=.jsp

December 6, 200421 yr Author Los Angeles Dodgers Downing likely radio analyst The Los Angeles Times reports Al Downing is likely to be named the new radio commentator. The Los Angeles Dodgers named Charley Steiner, a former ESPN anchor/reporter and New York Yankees broadcaster, as the team's newest broadcaster for both television and radio. Steiner, 55, is best known nationally for his 14 years at ESPN, where he served as a SportsCenter anchor, baseball and football commentator, and baseball and boxing reporter. Steiner comes to the Dodgers after three seasons on New York Yankee broadcasts for WCBS Radio and the YES network. The Los Angeles Times reports former Dodger second baseman Steve Sax has emerged as a candidate for one of the commentating jobs, which will be decided later, the Dodgers say. The Long Beach Press-Telegram had reported San Diego Padres baseball voice Matt Vasgersian has emerged as perhaps the leading candidate to replace the fired Ross Porter on Dodgers broadcasts next year, but the USC grad has two years left on his contract, which is with Cox Communications, not the Padres. He's trying to balance the legal side of a move as well as going from a TV job with the Padres to ostensibly a radio job with the Dodgers. On those road trips Vin Scully does not make, the Dodgers will go to a two-man radio booth. The Dodgers have not renewed the contract of Ross Porter, who had been with the club for 28 seasons. The team re-signed Rick Monday and announced it would employ two new announcers: a play-by-play voice and an analyst. The team will use a two-man booth for the first time in its history. Legendary broadcaster Vin Scully will continue to work solo and keep his schedule, calling the first three innings on radio and the remainder on television. Al Downing, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, Tommy Davis, Eric Davis and Eric Karros all worked as guest analysts near the end of the season. Dodgers executive vice president Lon Rosen told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin an analyst may be brought in from that group next season.
December 6, 200421 yr Author Boston Red Sox Orsillo renewed; McDonough out? NESN also extended the contract of studio host Tom Caron. The Boston Herald reports sources said NESN executives don't plan to renew Sean McDonough for Red Sox work. A NESN spokesman said he had not heard that report.
December 6, 200421 yr Author Florida Marlins Reports: Leiter to TV in 2006 Several published reports say Mets pitcher Al Leiter will sign a one-year playing contract with the Marlins and then move into the TV booth as an analyst in 2006. Leiter has performed very well on the national level as a studio analyst for ESPN and in-booth during Fox's playoff coverage. The Palm Beach Post reports FSN Florida has received tapes for more than 40 play-by-play announcers to replace Len Kasper, who left to broadcast Chicago Cubs games. The cable TV network will accept tapes until Dec. 10, then call in a select few for interviews. The network hopes to announce a decision by mid-January, general manager Jeff Genthner said. Genther added radio announcers Dave Van Horne and Jon "Boog" Sciambi will get equal consideration. The team, though, will likely pursue a broadcaster more established with television.
December 23, 200421 yr Author Nats To WTEM Or WJFK-FM & AM - 12/22 - The DC Post reports that DC's new baseball team, the Nationals, will either be heard on Clear Channel's sports talk WTEM or on Infinity's hot talk WJFK-FM, plus its Baltimore sister, sports talk WJFK-AM. A radio broadcast deal could be reached as early as 12/31, but will almost certainly be in place by 1/7. DCRTV has already reported that Bonneville, which owns all-news WTOP, has turned down airing the Nationals..... http://www.dcrtv.com/
December 23, 200421 yr Author The Yankees won't be back on Channel 2 next season. Officials with knowledge of the negotiations between the YES Network and WCBS say the New York network affiliate passed on its chance to buy 20-25 regular-season games for next season because the games conflicted with the network's regular prime-time schedule. The Yankees and YES have not finalized where those games will be broadcast, but YES officials are in discussions with WWOR Channel 9. The station is controlled by Fox, the former employer of YES chief executive Tracy Dolgin. http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?...52600320290.xml
