Cardinals sign C Einar Diaz and P Al Reyes

Featured Replies

Espn Insider is reporting that the Cards are about to sign Einar Diaz to a one year, $600k deal.

Last year with Montreal (55 games)

.223 AVG 1 HR 11 RBI

Career (612 games)

.256 AVG 20 HR 185 RBI

He's a career .667 hitter at Busch Stadium. Ok 2/3 is too little to take from.

He's a career .990 defender and has played one game at 2b and one game at 3b in his career.

I think it would be an ok backup to Yadier. Everything you could ask for in a backup catcher. Experienced, good defensively, respected, and most of all CHEAP. Could do much worse (See McKay) IMO!

Why don't you just let Yanier play?

Oh nevermind, I understood this deal as Diaz being the premier catcher on the team.

Cardinals sign C Einar Diaz and P Al Reyes

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals wasted little time finding a replacement for Mike Matheny as the team signed catcher Einar Diaz to a one-year contract on Wednesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Diaz, 31, joins the Cardinals just two days after Matheny signed as a free agent with San Francisco. The veteran is expected to provide guidance to 22-year-old Yadier Molina.

Last season, Diaz batted .223 with one home run and 11 RBI for the Montreal Expos. In 612 career games with Cleveland, Texas and Montreal, he owns a .256 average with 20 homers and 185 RBI.

The Cardinals also agreed to terms with righthander Al Reyes on a one-year contract.

The 34-year-old Reyes made 12 appearances - including his first two career starts - for St. Louis in 2004, allowing one run and three hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts in 12 innings.

In 232 career games with Milwaukee, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, the New York Yankees and St. Louis, Reyes is 15-8 with three saves and a 3.92 ERA.
