Launched with 18 teams, the NIFL combined several teams from the defunct Indoor Professional Football League and Indoor Football League, as well as eight brand new markets, to provide an alternative and inexpensive form of sports entertainment. The first game in NIFL history took place on March 28th, 2001. A spirited contest emerged with the Yakima Shockwave defeating the Southern Oregon Heat 27 - 21. After a 16 game season ended, eight teams made the NIFL playoffs, and the first league championship, known as the ?Indoor Bowl I? saw the Mississippi Fire Dogs defeat the Wyoming Cavalry 55-21 in Biloxi on August 4th, 2001. 2002 saw expansion fever hit the NIFL as 3 new teams came to compete in the fast-paced league and the geographic footprint expanded across the United States. After an 18 week season and playoffs, ?Indoor Bowl II? took place in Wheeling, West Virginia, with the Ohio Valley Greyhounds defeating the Billings Outlaws in a close game with a final score of 55-52. The 2003 season saw some franchise relocation as well as three new teams to bring the total to 24 teams, and the third NIFL champion was crowned as the Ohio Valley Greyhounds won their second ?Indoor Bowl? in a row by defeating the Utah Warriors 45-37 at the Wheeling Civic Center. For the fourth consecutive year, the NIFL expanded the number of franchises to 26 teams, as well as expanding the playoffs to include a total of 12 teams. The third time wasn?t the charm for Ohio Valley, as two new teams made it to ?Indoor Bowl III? this time. The Lexington Horsemen scored 14 unanswered points to beat the hometown Sioux Falls Storm 59-38. So with a strengthened foundation to build upon after some post-season defections, the NIFL made the pivotal decision to expand into two huge markets known for their high caliber of fans and players. Recently, the Texas-based Intense Football League and their six teams merged into the NIFL, and it was soon announced afterwards that four new teams would set up in the football state of Florida. The Lakeland Thunderbolts, Daytona Beach Hawgs, and the Kissimmee Kreatures will be joining the Miami Morays to fight for the right to be called the best NIFL team in Florida. In all, it is anticipated that 22 teams will take part in the fifth season. The NIFL brand of football is similar to other brands of indoor football with a few differences that enhance the enjoyment of the game for spectators. The nets in the end-zone have been eliminated, which results in more balls for the fans in attendance to enjoy a keepsake should they go out of bounds. The NIFL also focuses on signing players who either played at state colleges or players from local high schools who took their game to out-of-state colleges and are returning home after graduation. Whomever signs with the Morays, the odds are very high that they made a name for themselves somehow in Florida, enhancing the bond between the team and the fans. With an official roster of 22 players, the need for two-way players is eliminated and the rise of situational specialists comes more into play, making for a more energetic and fresh style of indoor football. Allowing 3 men in motion before a snap also lends itself to a high-scoring game that is sure to bring the fans to their feet upwards of seven or eight times a game as they celebrate the potent offensive attack. In addition to local talent, the coaching staff will be drawing upon well-known names from the surrounding community. Having a recognizable established coach will help ensure the credibility of the franchise as it sets about strengthening the ties that form between the fan-base and the team. With a 14 game schedule set to start in March, with seven of those games being played in the cozy interior of the Miami Arena, the Morays are poised to make an impact in the minds of the South Florida sports fan who already knows the game of football, and is ready to root for a winning team in the best city for football in Florida.
