International Alliances

Featured Replies

I was thinking about this the other day, and part of me feels that military alliances are not even important anymore. I feel like economic alliances have been the trend lately, and is the way into a globalized future.

We have NAFTA, EU, African Union, this new South American Union thingy (I forget the name), and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).

The UN seems to be more trouble than it was originally put out for. It doesn't promote democracy (at least the EU does...although there are a lot of things I don't like about the EU) like it could and should, and it is just another set of bureacracy countries must go through.

The new wave is economic unions for trade purposes. The U.S. can handle itself militarily, and with economic unions, countries will support it's other members.

The UN is a load of crap.

The League of Nations was a load of crap.

I find it hilarious that people talk about how if we let the UN go in with us into Iraq, things would be much better. The League of Nations played a big part in starting the mess in Iraq 80+ years ago!

The reason people say it would've been better is purely diplomatic. I find the UN to be a total sack of crap. Too much bureaucracy, too little action. Even their troops participate in the violence (See Africa right now).

Military alliances are what led to World War One Furman, and I am sure you know that. The only major alliance I can really think of in the world military wise is NATO now.

Military alliances are great if your a small country that needs protection, but the U.S. doesn't really need help defending against Canada. Alliances would be nice to fight terrorism, but not desperatly needed.
