Angry about new contract, Mandich considers 790

The WQAM soap opera continues to churn out surprises.

A day after reaching an agreement in principle to remain at WQAM, Jim Mandich is again considering an offer from 790 ESPN Radio after taking issue with the contract that WQAM drew up.

Mandich, who on Thursday decided to host a 4-7 p.m. talk show beginning Monday, said WQAM on Friday gave him a ``19-page onerous, very restrictive document that surprised me and bears no resemblance to the [shorter] document I've operated on the past eight years.''

Mandich said he would not report to his new shift Monday, but would show up to do the 2 p.m. show that his current contract stipulates. Howard David had been scheduled to work that 2 p.m. shift beginning Monday, with Hank Goldberg switching to mornings (7-10 a.m.). That potentially could leave two people reporting for the same shift at 2 p.m. Monday and an opening to fill at 4 p.m.

ESPN Radio 790, meanwhile, is expected to continue courting Mandich. If he goes to 790, Mandich would remain the Dolphins radio analyst, if the team moves its games from WQAM, as is widely expected. He also would do a talk show, probably in the early afternoon.

Mandich has been the Dolphins' radio analyst for the past 13 years, but it's unlikely 790 officials would agree to allow him to do games on their station and a talk show on WQAM.

? Orlando Alzugaray agreed to do a weekday 5-7 a.m. show on WQAM. Program director Josh Darrow declined to comment on what the station's lineup will be Monday.

This could likely send Minervini packing to WQAM.....keep tuned.

Goldberg claims that 790 offered him LeBatard's slot:

Goldberg: Rival station offered job

-- Jim Sarni

Posted January 8 2005

Hank Goldberg found the inflammatory words from 790 ESPN Radio amusing.

"It was odd since they offered me the 4 p.m. slot on their station last week," said Goldberg, who chose to stay at WQAM (560-AM) and move to mornings.

Joel Feinberg, the president and CEO of Primetime Media Group, which owns ESPN Radio, addressed Goldberg's move Thursday: "If the Hammer is going to run from [Dan] LeBatard and Stugotz, and thinks he can get a head start on Joe [Rose] by starting at 7 a.m., then the Big Dog will get unleashed at 7 a.m."

"They asked me what it would take to get me to come over, and they made a significant offer," said Goldberg, who has been trouncing Dan LeBatard's show on ESPN Radio in the Nielsen trends.

"There was some dialogue," said Alan Brown, vice president of communication for ESPN Radio. "That's all we want to say."

WQAM shows Mandich a real radio contract and he freaks. :lol

Shows you he was bluffing about leaving the Dolphins. He was trying to get 790 to offer him a better deal. Problem is his timeslot is held by Dan Patrick. Looks like 790 would have to get ESPN Radio to let them switch Dan Patrick to another timeslot or air The Herd with Cowherd in Minervini's slot in order to make good on their contract.

I hear the new afternoon host(s) may be including a daily (or at least weekly) visit by a Marlin and Jack McKeon. Likely not on the same day, but it is likely.

Edit: Could be one of the reasons Mandich is not taking the job. Apparently he doesn't want things "forced" on him.

Thanks for moving this to the Media Forum Admin. Appreciate it!

No prob. Sometimes it's hard to know where it belongs especially when WQAM is the flagship Marlins station and this is related to them but I felt as if this wasn't directly related to the Marlins enough.

I wish the team would put this baby to bed already, quite annoying with all the moves going on.
