A source said Sunday that Carter remains "very close" to agreeing to contract terms with the Dolphins. Carter would be the second defensive lineman signed by the Dolphins in free agency. The team added free agent Vonnie Holliday on Saturday. Carter, 31, placed the Dolphins atop his wish list after recently being released by Tennessee in a salary-cap move. .... link Why are we shelling out top dollar to the defensive side of the ball? Last I checked our O-line needs major help, not to mention the rest of the offense. This guy is 31, he has 3 years left in the tank at the most, can someone tell me why this makes sense?

March 7, 200521 yr It works for me because teams could run all over us last year and obviously cannot depend on Bowens to come back healthy. We needed a DT/DE. Not many good Free agents for offensive line this year. Plus since the Phins restructed McIntosh's contract part of the deal was that the Phins would not draft or sign any LT. I expect phins will sign a guard through free agency. Fritz I highly doubt that he will switch to a 3-4 defense this year. Maybe in the future, but Jason Taylor at OLB just does not fit.
March 7, 200521 yr Taylor's going to be blitzing most of the time from that OLB spot. He'll be a bitch to keep out of the QB's back pocket. I think Taylor will do fine at the OLB spot. He's got excellent tackling skills. And no back is going to be able get outside on him. I'm very interested to see how this defense is going to shake out. As it stands now they have a bunch of interchangeable parts that gives them a lot of options. This has the potential to confuse the nuts off opposing offenses. Hell, I'm confused already. Also, I think we're going to attend to the offense mostly through the draft. We'll take a back with the second pick, probably some guys for the OL later on. I think the thought is between the draft and this new OL guru/coach, we can solve a lot of our offensive problems. We do need someone to replace Greenwood's overpaid ass now, though.
March 7, 200521 yr Taylor actually said he wants to play some offense, so I think he's more than willing to be versatile with his position. But anyway, the 3-4 makes sense, because our secondary is great already, and we usually do well on pass defense. But I think we ranked somewhere near DEAD LAST last year in run defense. Having more LB probably means giving up an extra yard or two off the line, but it stops them from getting the big gains as they did time and time again last year.

Also Taylor is a perfect fit for an OLB. He will be blitzing most of the time and is a good tackler, plus if you watched games last year there were times he went out and covered the RB on pass plays. The team has told McIntosh he will compete with Vernon Carey, the team's first-round pick in 2004, for the starting job. Phins did sign Carter to a 5 year 30 million dollar deal

The Dolphins had spent most of the weekend working on the deal with Carter after signing fellow defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday to a two-year deal Friday. Agent Harold Lewis confirmed a deal had been reached, but declined to discuss the terms of the contract. Carter was cut last month by Tennessee in a salary cap move. The remaking of the Dolphins defense figures to continue this week. The team is scheduled to have safety Kenoy Kennedy arrive in South Florida on Monday night for a visit Tuesday. The Dolphins are extremely interested in signing Kennedy, an experienced player and a big hitter, after signing Travares Tillman to a two-year deal. March 7, 200521 yr I like what they are doing. The defense is good now but has to be mantained. They maintain the defense through free agency and fix the offense through the draft. Theyll take Brown with the second pick if they dont trade down and IMO, thats the best choice. Theyll likely trade Surtain and use his pick on a lineman to add to Carey, Wade Smith, and McKinney. I think the most important acquisition is Hudson Houck who did an amazing job in San Diego. The WR core is already good enough with Chambers, Booker and McMichael. The only issue left is QB and that really cant be fixed with any signings.

Financial terms of the deal for Carter, who spent the past four seasons with Tennessee, were not released, but the Miami Herald said it could be worth up to $30 million. Carter led the Titans with six sacks this past season. The 10-year veteran has been selected to a pair of Pro Bowls, first earning the honor in 1999 with the St. Louis Rams and receiving the nod again after the 2002 season with the Titans. The Florida product's 86 career sacks rank third among players who were active in 2004, behind only Michael Strahan (118) and Simeon Rice (105). Carter played his first six NFL seasons with St. Louis, helping the Rams to the Super Bowl title after the 1999 campaign. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to add someone of Kevin's caliber to our defense," said Dolphins head coach Nick Saban. "Kevin has been a quality player who has contributed to winning teams in both St. Louis and Tennessee, including a Super Bowl championship with the Rams.
