Posted March 9, 200519 yr comment_447783 Apparently Broward has approved the slots, and Miami-Dade has rejected them. Slot Machines Get Split Decision 57 minutes ago Add to My Yahoo! Local - WPLG Click10.com By 9 p.m., it was clear that Broward County voters have approved the addition of slot machines to racetracks and a jai-lai fronton in that county. It was also becoming clear that Miami-Dade voters denied the addition of the Las Vegas-style slot machines to facilities there. There are a total of five dog and horse tracks and two jai-lai frontons affected by the vote. Hollywood Greyhound Track, Dania Jai-Alai, Pompano Park and Gulfstream Park in Broward County will be allowed to have slot gambling in the facilities. Flagler Dog Track, Miami Jai-Alai and Calder Race Course in Miami-Dade County lost their bid for slot machines. The turnout for the vote was light, and the results were close in Miami-Dade County for most of the evening, with the positive vote in Broward apparent from the start. The Pros And Cons The slot machine issue has been divided sharply between two groups. Those who want Las Vegas-style slot machines in South Florida insist they will create jobs and pump money into schools. Opponents say machines will transform Florida from a family friendly destination into a gambling mecca that will dramatically increase crime and other social ills. Teachers and pari-mutuel interests lobbied hard for passage, saying the slots will bring thousands of jobs, boost the local economy and deliver perhaps $500 million annually to schools. The seven pari-mutuels tried to make the deal palatable to voters by promising a 30 percent cut of slot revenues for education. Miami-Dade voters may have been influenced by Gov. Jeb Bush, a staunch gambling opponent, who spoke out harshly against slots during the past week. Disney World, apparently concerned that they may harm Florida's image and siphon tourists from theme parks, gave $25,000 last year to the anti-slots movement. Indian casinos and operators of gambling cruises to nowhere fear competition and also helped fund the campaign to block the new casinos. Now that Broward County voters have said yes, state lawmakers will have to decide how the plan to put slots at the pari-mutuel facilities will be enacted. They'll say how many slot machines and what types are legal, plus how they'll be taxed and how long they can operate daily. In the past, Florida voters rejected three gambling expansion plans since the 1970s. Three Cities Elect Mayors Even though interest in the slot referendum dominated this election, there were a number of other important races decided by voters. Debby Eisinger won Cooper City mayor over Angelica Palank with 54 percent of the vote. Deerfield Beach elected Albert R. Capellini mayor. He defeated Martha "Mart" McGeary with 60 percent of the vote. In West Park, Eric H. Jones, Jr. was elected mayor with 48 percent of the vote over opponents Joe Phillips and Marvin Price. March 9, 200519 yr comment_447787 I'm pretty sure it barely passed statewide, and failed in Dade. But let me double check this, I could be thinking of a different ammendment. March 9, 200519 yr comment_447789 It did barely pass in the state. It barely passed in the state because WPB, Broward and Dade voters voted overwhelmingly for it. March 9, 200519 yr comment_447790 Broward got more people out than Dade. Pretty pathetic on Dade's part. 706060[/snapback] It is, considering the "con side" to this is that it will bring the morals of living down. Like HELLO there are already casinos around, look at the seminoles. And these are going inside of places which already codone gambling. Oi.... March 9, 200519 yr comment_447791 It looks like it did pass in Dade (I don't remember what number it was, I think 4, but all passed here anyways) buit if my hunch on it being is right I wouldn't exactly call it passing overwhelmingly. Regardless, I think Dade made the right call. I think we should have gambling, it would be a plentiful source of revenue, but I think the way they proposed it isn't the way to go. It'd be much better suited on the beach area, where more money can be had out of it. More people go to the beaches already as it is, so you can get those people that already go plus the newcomers. Besides, there's more than one reason to hit up the beaches besides gambling. Also, my biggest problem is the money being sent elsewhere. It would have been Dade and Broward running the slots, but everyone else is supposed to get our money? How about the money stays in Miami-Dade and Broward since it was made down here? The Indians have gambling, but that's a whole different issue. That's the source of revenue that should be taxed and/or regulated somehow, if not by the state then by the Feds. March 9, 200519 yr comment_447792 Yes it was #4 on the ballot. Maybe not overwhelimingly in Dade, but it passed in the tri-county area, even though in most of the state it did not. This is the first time in a state election. after a couple of attempts, that a gambling initiative passed. And I don't think they can tax the seminoles since it is on reservation land, one reason I think they are allowed to have the casinos and slots. If Broward did not allow the taxes they get to be split among the entire state I doubt the initative would have passed in November. Either way it helps Broward more because it gives the economy a shot in the arm, giving lots of people jobs and something productive to do. I find it kind of the opposite situation of the Marlins asking for state money for a stadium for them. Tri-county area folks are benifiting for what the entire state helps pay for. In this instance the entire state is benefitting from what Broward is doing. March 9, 200519 yr comment_447793 The November amendment passed by a good margin in Dade. It really bothers me that the Dade referendum failed in the polls today. All those ads on TV equating slots to nevada-style crime were total bulls***, and you don't even hear about how they were paid for primarily by Seminole gaming interests. Looks like it worked out well for them. How slot machines inside racetracks increase crime is totally beyond me. Can anyone explain that one? Why should we take all the risks of gambling only to have the money sent elsewhere in the state. March 9, 200519 yr comment_447795 The problem in dade for march elections is that no one cares. If it had been on a november ballot just like the initiative was, it woulda passed. Looking back at state history the north has always been paying for the southern part of the state. We owe them some.
