Accord
PHILADELPHIA -- Even though closer Guillermo Mota was officially placed on the disabled list on Sunday, the Marlins are encouraged by the prognosis. Since there was swelling in the elbow, there was a concern that Mota could miss extended time. Instead, results of an MRI and CT scan taken Saturday in South Florida revealed inflammation but no structural damage. "It was good news," manager Jack McKeon said. With Mota on the 15-day DL, the Marlins recalled reliever Travis Smith from Triple-A Albuquerque. Actually, Smith never actually returned to Albuquerque. The right-hander was with the club, but he was optioned to the Minor Leagues on Saturday with the understanding that if Mota was headed for the DL, he would be brought right back. So Smith watched Saturday's game at Citizens Bank Park in street clothes, and returned to the team hotel about 10 p.m. while the game was in a rain delay. Mota complained of tightness in his elbow Friday afternoon, and he returned to South Florida the next morning. He is taking medication and being advised not to fly. So he will not join the team in Atlanta on Tuesday. Mota is scheduled to start throwing sometime next weekend, and he could be back in three weeks. "We're not going to rush this thing," McKeon said. "There is plenty of time. It's early." McKeon is glad Mota came forward and told him he wasn't feeling right. The Marlins recently saw reliever Antonio Alfonseca go on the DL because of a stress fracture in his right elbow. Alfonseca said he hadn't felt right about three weeks before the injury, but he didn't tell the team. Alfonseca failed a physical because of a herniated disk in his back when he was about to sign as a free agent in December. He ended up signing an incentive-laden contract. "The positive report on Mota has got to excite him," McKeon said. "If there is a little bit of tightness in there, he might be afraid to let it go." http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...t=.jsp&c_id=fla
