July 27, 200323 yr From http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sport...all/6394888.htm ? Juan Pierre established a career high when he stole his 48th base Friday and has a shot to reach 80 -- a figure no player has reached in 15 years. ''It's not a shock, but it's pretty good to see I've stolen so many so early,'' said Pierre, who is on pace to finish with 75 stolen bases. ? Carl Pavano needs to pitch 7 1/3 innings against the Phillies today to match his career high for innings pitched in one season -- 134 2/3 in 1998 with Montreal. Pavano hasn't missed any of his starts this season. Im very happy for Pavano who seems like a great guy who goes out there and battles night in and night out...Now that our bullpen is somewhat solidified hopefully we can give him a rest after 6 strong innings! Did he have only 108 pitches in his complete game??
July 27, 200323 yr wasnt Pavano always an injury problem earlier in his career. I thought I remembered (when people were discussing the Floyd trade to the Expos) that Pavano had always been a great prospect (at least a good one) but had injuries and such. Well, I think he has done a fine job this season, and stayed injury-free. Hollandsworth, too, has stayed injury-free.
July 27, 200323 yr I too am pleasantly surprised about Pavano and his ability to eat quality innings lately. Seems like his propensity to give up the big inning is a thing of the past.
July 27, 200323 yr Author I too am pleasantly surprised about Pavano and his ability to eat quality innings lately. Seems like his propensity to give up the big inning is a thing of the past. Remember the article that said he gives up most of his runs in the latter innings? I think his ERA could be below 3.50 if Vlad, Neal, and company hadnt decided to suck Him not being injured is huge for us and I think we should sign him to a nice little 3yr deal...Probably the best 5th starter in baseball.
July 27, 200323 yr Author I know its looking way ahead, but if we make the playoffs he will become a middle reliever...man it will be nice to have Pavano/Bump eating up innings before UU/Loop.
July 27, 200323 yr aahh that would be nice. Maybe even the possibility of throwing Penny in the pen some.
July 27, 200323 yr Author aahh that would be nice. Maybe even the possibility of throwing Penny in the pen some. Then we'd have 2 lefties and one righty! 2R and 2L would be sweet.
July 27, 200323 yr I think Pavano has come throug very nicely for us. I always liked this guy, even back with the Expos (when he was traded to them for Pedro). He always had front line ability, but never could stay healthy. He is still young, and could be a strong starter for years to come. Truthfully, if I had to pick between Pavano and Penny, I would take Pavano. Penny has more value being traded anyway, and with some of these propects down on the farm, we could possibly make up for losing Penny's talent - not to mention Pavano may cost us less money over the long haul. The other guy I absolutley love is Pierre. This guy is an excellent ballplayer, he is like Counsel with more ability. Just a smart, 'heady' ballplayer who is going to get better. It seems like he has improved all season. I think he could even end up with 70+ SBs - that would be very nice.
