Hope y'all don't mind this really off-off-topic. But I'm wondering if any of y'all have heard any whippoorwills lately. You know, the nocturnal birds? I have friends in Central Fla. who hear them all the time but not in South Fla. :(

What's a whipporwill?

Are you talking about a bat?

No, it's a bird that makes a sound at night that sounds like its saying whip-poor-will or I'll whup ya or something. I guess they're extinct if you haven't heard them. :(

Whip-poor-wills are members of the Nightjars family (or most people refer to them as Nighthawks.) While we do have Whip-poor-wills here, it is much more common to find the larger Chuck-will's-widows in the local South Florida area. I see (and) hear them just about every night in my neighborhood. Great birds to have around, they eat a lot of flying insects.

Yipppeeee! :)

I'm glad. It's just that I know someone in Homestead that said he hasn't heard one since the mid-90's. He used to hear them all the time before that. But he's seen night hawks, but they don't say anything.
