Contender or Pretender?

Featured Replies

When trying to break down if a team is a contender or pretender you look at who they have beat. Well looking at the 2005 Marlins it is easy to see their record is basically based upon beating last place teams and playing below .500 ball against .500+ teams.

The Marlins' Record: 27-22

Against teams at least .500 the Marlins are: 11-14

Against teams below the .500 mark the Marlins are 16-8

Against last place (or 5th place teams in the case of Cin) the Marlins are 16-6

The Bucs are the first losing team the Marlins have played this year not in last or 5th place.

Contenders or pretenders? Well the Marlins are 11-16 against teams not in last or 5th place. (ATL is 14-13 against .500+ teams.)

Marlins are just entering their typical middle-of-the-year slow down. The All Star Break is the goal on this leg of the marathon. Make it there within 3 games of first and you are fine.
