June 1, 200519 yr 00's- "Serenity" by Godsmack 90's- "Hail Mary" by Tupac Shakur 80's- "One" by Metallica 70's- "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin 60's- "All Along The Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix 50's- "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry I ignored appeal of the song, and effect on music itself - if I hadn't I probably would have gone with "Master of Puppets" for the 80's as being the barsetter for the dominant music of the time, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the 90's based on its invention of an entire genre. However, on pure talent and overall song value, these are my choices. - The 00's is a toss up for me. I chose Serenity because I think Godsmack is one of the few bands still making good stuff, and Serenity IMO is their best song (the lyrics really are awesome, big ups to Sully). - I think rap was the best music of the 90's, and Hail Mary IMO is the best song of the best rapper. The song itself on a pure lyrical standpoint is just gold. - One is Metallica's best song, and Metallica was easily the best band of the 80's. I almost went with Comfortably Numb but that's beginning of the 80's and is a different type of music. One combines great lyrics with one of the best solos of all time, a great intro and amazing performances from all the parts of the band. Listen to the S&M version of this - I don't care who you are, it's amazing. - Stairway to Heaven is the best song of all time by the best band of all time, with the best solo of all time thrown in for fun. No brainer here. - Another no brainer on AATWT, even though it is a cover Hendrix turns a solid Dylan song into an absolutely amazing classic rock song. Hendrix's gutiar runs smoothly through Dylan's lyrics, and the finale is among the best in music history. - The 50's had mostly early rock and roll music that didn't say much but sounded good and had a nice beat. Johnny B Goode manages to combine some great guitar work with nice vocals to deliver an all around package most 50's songs gell short of.
