Hey guys. I have a quck little question for you. I know how the general rule is you need 6 full years of service before you can apply for free agency. Here is my question. When a guy like Stephen Drew signs a 5 year deal right after he gets drafted, what does that mean. When does this contract kick in? Is the team still somehow guaranteed those 6 years? I don't understand what you're asking. Are you asking if a high school or college amateur comes out of the draft and signs a 5-year deal, when will they be a free agent? A player must have six full years of major league service to become a free agent. That contract he signs after drafting just establishes his signing bonus, how and when it will be paid and other clauses. A popular one among top amateurs call for the immediate placing on the 40-man roster which would expediate their track to the majors to no more than 3 years. Still, they would need 6 full years of major league service or else have their contract or arbitration rights terminated by their club.

I think the 5 year deal gurantee the player a base salary in addition to his signing bonus. hard to tell without knowing details.
