June 6, 200521 yr Having two fast leadoff hitters, if when they get on base to start an inning you bunt them over?? Bunt over LoDuca or Delgado or Gonzalez, but why Luis or JP?? Doesn't that sort of defeat the whole purpose of having speed? Bringing in a lefty specialist who can't get lefties out? Then bringing him in again, and again, and again? Switching the lineup everyday hoping to get a "spark?" IMO our opening day lineup was pretty good. Jack loves to shake things up when we are not hitting well, but it has been shaken so many times it's starting to defy logic. Bringing in "cold" relievers in crucial situations. Relief pitchers are a lot like hitters, they go on streaks. Why not use our "hot" pitchers in big situations, and our "cold" pitchers in not so big situations? Seems like common sense to me. Having a hitting coach when he apparently doesn't get any results? For god's sake we don't do too much right when the game is on the line. Our situational hitting is as atrocious as it has been since Robinson has been here. I'm not as pessimistic as a lot of you guys. I know it's a long season, but we do have some problems. Jack does not handle the bullpen well, and I think his lineup shuffling hurts more than it helps. I actually think our biggest problem is our bullpen right now. Guys like Mecir, Riedling, and Bump have come back down to earth, and we're really missing Alfonseca. Our bats hopefully will come around, but we may need another arm in the pen.
June 6, 200521 yr i think we hae to many problems to worry about. yes we do need a good pitcher but we also need the good battters we have to come around
June 6, 200521 yr Author Don't get me wrong, I like having Castillo hitting first. IMO he is the best leadoff hitter in baseball bar-none. My point is that Luis has speed. Remember 2003 when pitchers would make tons of mistakes because they were worried about one of the two speedsters on the basebaths? Now I know Luis has lost a step, but opposing pitchers still have to worry about him. Let Pierre sit in there and take some pitches, and give Luis a chance to swipe the bag if you want him at second. If we're gonna bunt our leadoff hitter to 2nd everytime he singles, why not bad Loduca leadoff? My point is that it sorta defeats the purpose of having speed at the top, supposedly one of our strengths if used correctly.
June 6, 200521 yr I think I can answer your first question. Luiy and JP are still recovering from injury, and do not have the best success rates anyway. Jeff Cox is a cautious third base coach from what I can tell. Most of the coaching staff are traditionalists who love the bunt. Also consider that we have many players who are struggling or being pressed for playing time. Some of these bunts might be intended for reasons not related to winning or losing the present game.
June 6, 200521 yr My answer is I have no idea. It's stupid. It seems to be an acknowlegement that the team's only going to score 2 or 3 runs anyway, so let's be sure to get that one run early before the other team does!

And JP is sucking at the plate, so the logic is get Castillo at 1st and bunt him over to 2nd, hopefuly JP can beat the throw once in a while

June 6, 200521 yr From what I've seen. Rarely do our baserunners tag up on deep flies. Rarely ever does he wave baserunners to come to third on an outfielder. One perfect relay kills a runner, and Cox is shaking in fear, playing station to station ball the rest of the night. Some of his most notable 'bad' 50/50 cals were the result of players not hustling or superstars so stunned they were asked to they tripped over themselves towards the plate.
