Chipper Jones on DL, might need surgery

Braves bring up their #1 prospect, Andy Marte

There was more bad news Monday for the Braves, who put Chipper Jones on the disabled list with a recurring foot injury that could possibly require surgery.

"I'm sure we could probably run across a scenario where I would have to get it fixed surgically," said the veteran third baseman, who will have an MRI exam Tuesday afternoon. "Hopefully, that's not the case."

Jones was placed on the 15-day disabled list and the Braves have no timetable for his return until after the MRI. If he requires surgery ? the worst-case scenario the Braves hope to avoid ? it seems likely he wouldn't return until well after the All-Star break.

The Braves filled his roster spot with the long-awaited callup of Andy Marte, rated the top third-base prospect in the minors by Baseball America and the top prospect in the Braves organization by many services.

It was uncertain how much playing time Marte would get, since rookie third baseman/shortstop Wilson Betemit has finally begun showing signs of developing into the player he was once projected to become.

The Braves said Jones has a ligament injury in the second toe of his left foot, but they aren't certain of the severity. They hope an MRI exam will show the exact nature of the injury, which was diagnosed as a bone bruise when Jones initially injured it April 24.

He missed seven starts after the initial injury, and played in varying degrees of pain until aggravating the injury with a swing Sunday at Pittsburgh that buckled Jones with pain he described as sharp and worse than the initial injury.
