Pitching and defense not so great

Baseball Prospectus recently had an article (paid subscription required) on the Cincinnati's Reds defense in which they compared the park-adjusted Defense Effeciency (basically the inverse of batting average on balls in play) rankings from a month ago. Then the Marlins as pointed out in a prior thread here were below league-average. The Marlins have slipped a bit and now are the third worst team in the majors in turning balls in play into outs and 24th when not adjusted by ballpark effects.

Now I should point out this is an imperfect stat as it treats all balls in play that result in no out being recorded as the same, single or double or triple. And that groundball pitching staffs - which the Marlins marginally are - tend to give up a greater amount of hits but fewer of them for extra bases. However itt goes along way to describe our year long struggles. Keep giving teams extra outs by error or poor range or poor decisions and it will catch up with you by the end of the game.

Also below you'll find the statistics of our pitching staff by month. Note that recently everyone but the bullpen has slumped.

** Big Four/Five are determined to be Beckett, Burnett, Pavano, Penny and Willis

Could this trend continue through the rest of the season? Who knows. The sample size is too small and too tainted from outside effects to draw anything from.

i still feel bad for him about that...and after Dallimore's grandslam was ushered into the stands by Wil Cordero....that' when i began to really dislike Cordero. And also when he struck out with two outs in the ninth inning, when the marlins needed only one more hit to get doughnuts
