The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department is the ninth busiest department in the country, according to a leading industry magazine.

Firehouse Magazine, which has conducted the annual ranking for 24 years, said Miami-Dade handled a total of 206,414 calls last year.

The department's engine companies, rescue and aerial units and stations were also ranked:

Squirt 2, out of the station at 6460 NW 27th Ave., was declared the sixth busiest engine company in the country. The unit responded to 5,161 calls for assistance.

Rescue 2, at the same station, responded to 5,035 calls and placed 22nd in the listing of busiest rescue/ambulance.

Aerial 17, assigned to a station at 7050 NW 36th St., was named the 11th busiest ladder with 2,785 calls.

In the list of busiest overall, Station 29 was ranked 20th with 11,826 calls for the year. The station is located at 351 SW 107th Ave.

The department's hazardous materials unit was rated 20th, with 621 calls for the year.

''We are pleased to see that our efforts have ranked us so highly when compared to so many departments,'' said Fire Chief Herminio Lorenzo.

More than 270 career fire departments provided information to be eligible to participate in the Firehouse survey. Among them were Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Atlanta.
