Local 10 News has learned that a man who was shot in an attempted robbery in southwest Miami-Dade County Thursday night is a former University of Miami and current Philadelphia Eagle football player.

Jerome McDougle was shot in his silver Mercedes near 122nd Court and Southwest 203rd Street.

Police said a group of three armed, masked men approached McDougle and demanded property. One of the men then shot McDougle in the abdominal area.

Fearing for his life, McDougle tried to get out of his car and another man fired two more shots, missing McDougle, but striking the driver's side door of his Mercedes, police said.

The three men fled on foot.

McDougle was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center where he underwent surgery. He is reported to be in good condition now.

McDougle was a first-round draft choice of the Eagles in 2003.

If you have any information that could help investigators call Miami-Dade County Crimestoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.

He's expected to play in a couple weeks. May he have a speedy recovery.
