His next fight is coming up September 24th on HBO against Wlad Klitschko. This is a big step up fight for him as he's going up against a former WBO champion and the winner of the fight will go on to fight for The IBF Heavyweight Title.

 

Of course, I like Peter in this fight. Wlad has problems with guys who are agressive and pack a punch, as we saw with Corrie Sanders. Wlad is going to have to keep Peter off with a jab but I still see Peter connecting and connecting big.

YES! I'm so glad it's not going to be a $50 PPV.

I will have to check this guy out, and see what he is all about.

 

For a while it seemed the Wlad Klishtko was going to be the real deal and be better than his brother, but since that Sanders fight he has gone straight down hill. If he wins, he might be back.

Not huge, he's short but he's like a tank. He's just got awesome power and is such a breath of fresh air from the recently stale heavyweight division.

I'd pick Peter to win the fight, but I still think Wlad has a decent chance. Wlad still has power, despite his terrible chin and stamina problems. If Wlad has any bit of confidence he could test Peter's chin.

On paper, it's a heavyweight fight with more intrigue and meaning than the various title bouts being discussed. Samuel Peter vs. Wladimir Klitschko is the sort of high-stakes fight that could give the heavyweight division a much-needed shot in the arm.

 

The two punchers whose careers are going in opposite directions will meet in a title elimination bout Sept. 24 (HBO) at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall. A press conference to make the match official will be held on Aug. 10 in New York.

 

But Dino Duva, Peter's promoter, couldn't wait to talk about the fight on Tuesday.

 

"I am very psyched for it. I guess the last time I was this psyched for a fight was with Johnny Ruiz vs. Kirk Johnson," Duva said. "Unfortunately, Kirk didn't come through, but I have more confidence in Samuel. Wladimir Klitschko is a very good fighter, a tough fighter and it's a step up for Samuel. We know that. But I think Samuel is something special."

 

In one corner will be Peter (24-0, 21 KOs), the untested Nigerian knockout artist who has been turning heads with a one highlight-reel knockout after another. At 24, the 2000 Olympian is viewed by many as the heavyweight heir apparent in a division desperately in need of an infusion of excitement.

 

Klitschko, the younger brother of heavyweight title holder Vitali Klitschko, represents a huge step up in competition for Peter. A victory would go a long way to answering many questions about whether or not he has what it takes to be a serious contender.

 

"This is the moment of truth. It's time for us to step up or shut up," said Ivalyo Gotzev, Peter's manager. "The winner should be the clear No. 1 contender. It's a huge fight. I believe in Samuel and his commitment to the fight. We will seize the moment."

 

Across the ring will stand Klitschko (44-3, 40 KOs), who used to carry the tag of heir apparent until his stock fell dramatically with a knockout loss to Corrie Sanders in 2003 and another knockout loss to Lamon Brewster and a shaky technical decision against DaVarryl Williamson in 2004.

 

A win against Peter will help Klitschko, 29, salvage some of the luster that has been stripped away by his recent performances. A loss could be a career killer.

 

"A win put him back at the top of the division," Klitschko adviser Shelly Finkel said. "People will realize he is one of the two or three best heavyweights and some of the taint that has happened recently will be gone. We know Peter is dangerous. Emanuel [steward, Klitschko's trainer] feels if Wladimir does what he's supposed to do, it's an easy fight. A lot of people think that Wladimir and Vitali are afraid of fighting the top guys. But now they are both going to fight the top guys and whatever happens, happens."

 

Junior welterweight titlist Miguel Cotto will defend his belt against Italy's Gianluca Branco in the co-feature.

 

The winner of Klitschko-Peter will be guaranteed a title shot, either against the winner of a mandated IBF title match between titlist Chris Byrd and Williamson or the winner of the September WBO title bout between belt holder Lamon Brewster and Luan Krasniqi. Both organizations have sanctioned Klitschko-Peter as an eliminator.

 

Peter could have pursued a WBC eliminator against Sinan Samil Sam of Turkey but it was a more difficult fight to put together and a less lucrative one because there was no guarantee of American television. Klitschko-Peter, however, was very attractive to HBO, which is paying $1.5 million for the fight.

 

Klitschko, the 1996 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist, will earn $1.025 million in addition to having lucrative German TV rights. Peter will earn a career-high $900,000. Before the fight was finally made, Peter and Klitschko engaged in a war of words through press releases.

 

Peter initially called out Klitschko, trying to goad either him or Sam into a fight.

 

"Please don't try to hide behind your promoters or managers," Peter wrote in an open letter challenging both men. "Boxing fans around the world deserve to know who the next heavyweight king will be. Let's settle this in the ring like honorable gentlemen. We are fighters and warriors and are supposed to fight the best to prove we are the best. Which of you is man enough to try and do it against me?"

 

Klitschko eventually took him up on the offer.

 

"Peter has challenged me to a fight," Klitschko said. "Well, I wholeheartedly accept the challenge. Let's do it. I am ready. The question is, is Samuel Peter ready? Peter can talk the talk, but now it is time to walk the walk.''
