October 6, 200521 yr Marlins, Girardi plan to speak BY KEVIN BAXTER AND CLARK SPENCER kbaxter@herald.com The New York Yankees have granted permission for the Marlins to interview bench coach Joe Girardi for their managerial opening. Girardi, who is believed to be the Marlins' preferred candidate, said Wednesday he would call his agent this morning to arrange a meeting. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that although he would hate to lose Girardi, the chance to manage in the major leagues was a great opportunity for the former big-league catcher. The Marlins were believed to be interested in adding Girardi to manager Jack McKeon's staff last season as a manager-in-waiting. McKeon resigned Sunday. Girardi spoke this summer of a desire to be a manager but lately has refused to talk about his future, citing the possibility for distraction for the Yankees during the postseason. Also surfacing as a candidate for the Marlins' job Wednesday was Ken Macha, who has severed ties with Oakland Athletics. Macha's agent, Alan Nero, told The Associated Press he had spoke to the Marlins after contract talks ended Wednesday with the A's. Macha is from Pittsburgh and might be considered for the Pirates' opening. But sources said Macha has told friends he would prefer the Marlins' managing position over the Pirates'. The Marlins also are expected to request permission to talk with Atlanta Braves third-base coach Fredi Gonzalez and former Tampa Bay Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella.
October 6, 200521 yr This pretty well sums up all the rumors floating around at the moment. I don't believe we need "permission" to speak with Piniella though.
October 6, 200521 yr No reported official contact with Fredi yet. We should interview him tomorrow, the Braves' offday.
