An Age Question

Featured Replies

With all of the trades this offseason, planned and completed, it is evident we will be fielding the youngest starting MLB team in 2006. My question is, what is the record for the youngest starting team ever fielded in the history of the MLB? Not some kind of promotional deal, either. I'm talking about the regular starters day in and day out.

Well, let's see, as of now this is the age of the starters:

1B - Jacobs (26)

2B - ? (Cano, perhaps - 23)

SS - Ramirez (22)

3B - Miggy (23)

LF - Willingham (28)

CF - Aguila (26)

RF - Hermida (22)

C - ?

P - Willis (24)

The average of of that squad is 24. That's damn young

I did a little searching on the internet and it looks like I found the answer to my question in part. According to an article here http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/bp/789556.html the youngest offense on a first-place team in the history of MLB was the 1967 Red Sox with an average age of 25.54 years of age.

Our 2006 opening day lineup right now would probably look something like this if there were no more trades. All ages are what they will be as of opening day in April:

1. Juan Pierre, cf, 28

2. Hanley Ramirez, ss, 22

3. Miguel Cabrera, 3b, 22

4. Jeremy Hermida, rf, 22

5. Paul Lo Duca, c, 33

6. Mike Jacobs, 1b, 25

7. Josh Willingham, lf, 27

8. Josh Wilson, 2b, 25 OR Robert Andino, 2b, 21

Average age with Wilson = 25.5

Average age with Andino = 25

However, it seems all but inevitable that we will be trading Lo Duca and Pierre and filling their spots with a couple of youngsters and we will probably be able to shave another year or two off that average.
