April 2, 200620 yr I need help proving something..I had alot of free time this afternoon and tonight, so I decided to try and prove a theory wrong that my teacher told us in my pre-calculus class. It has to do with polar coordinates and symmetry. He says it can be symmetrical across "0,1, or 3" things (polar axis, horizontal axis, pole), but not just 2 of them (only polar/horiz., polar/pole, pole/horiz.). I think that a parabola in the first quadrant (maybe with center at (1,1)), rotated 325 degrees in "XY form", then transformed to polar form, will be symmetrical across polar and horizontal axises (sp?), but not the pole. I got stuck a little while ago, and I'm hoping one of my fellow math friends can help me.. Starting equation is Y= - (X - 1)squared + 1 for the regular parabola. I used rotation formulas to rotate it 325 degrees, got my messy equation, and attempted to change to polar form. A little afterwards, I realized I screwed up, and went back a few steps, only to mess up again..So, my question to you is: Can you prove this? Good luck! If you don't get it, don't reply. :cool

April 2, 200620 yr Well, if it's symmetric to the two axiseses then it has symmetric with respect to the third. I know what you're trying to say with your crazy example thingy, but that you thought of that for so long (and incorrectly) shows you need to get laid more than I do. :o
