Sprinter John Capel tests positive for marijuana again

Featured Replies

LONDON ? (AP) ? Sprinter John Capel tested positive for marijuana at a meet in February and faces a two-year ban because it's his second such failed test.

The International Association of Athletics Federation, the world governing body for track and field, said Tuesday that Capel tested positive at the Norwich Union Grand Prix on Feb. 18 in Birmingham, England.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency will hear his case.

Capel has a history of marijuana use. He received a public warning from USADA in September 2004 after a positive test for marijuana that led to him being replaced on the U.S. 400-meter relay team at the Athens Olympics. Since it was his first violation, he was not suspended.

A wide receiver at Florida, he was selected by the Chicago Bears in 2001 but tested positive for the drug at the draft combine. On May 5, 2001, he was charged with possession of marijuana and the Bears released him.

In 2002, he failed to make the roster of the Kansas City Chiefs and returned to running on the advice of coach Dick Vermeil.

At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Capel was a favorite in the 200 but finished last in the final. Later, he said he had gone out partying with friends the night before the final.
