Marlins vs. Cubs Season Series

Featured Replies

Monday, July 07

Chicago 6, Florida 3

Pitchers: (#61) Josh Beckett (6 ER on 10 Hits in 6 IP) vs. Matt Clement (3 ER on 5 Hits in 6 1/3)

Play of the Game: Tied 3-3 in the 4th, the Marlins intentionally walk Paul Bako to load the bases to get to Matt Clement, who hits a two-run double to put the Cubs up for good.

Notes: The Chicago bullpen allowed 0 hits in the final 3 innings.

Verdict: This is not the same Beckett as he is right now. This was his 2nd start since coming off the DL, and in the first he didn't have much of a test as the Marlins cruised to a 20-1 victory over Atlanta.

Tuesday, July 08

Florida 4, Chicago 3

Pitchers: Dontrelle Willis (0 ER on 4 H in 5 2/3) vs. Carlos Zambrano (0 ER on 7 H in 6)

Play of the Game: Luis Castillo and Pudge hit back-to-back homers soon after a long rain delay. The Marlins hold on while Sosa pops up in the 9th with the tying run in scoring position.

Notes: Marlins leave 13 men on base.

Verdict: Both starters play well, but the Cubs relievers can not hold off the Marlins on this day.

Wednesday, July 09

Chicago Cubs 5, Florida 1

Pitchers: Carl Pavano (3 ER on 7 H in 7+ IP) vs. Kerry Wood (1 ER on 3 H in 9 IP)

Play of the Game: In a 1-1 Game in the Bottom of the 8th, Sammy Sosa hits a two-run HR off Pavano.

Notes: Wood complete game with 12 strikeouts.

Verdict: After 7 stellar innings, Pavano is sent back out in the 8th, where he gives up the game. At this point in the season, the Marlins were without Spooneybarger and did not yet have Urbina or Fox. This game would have turned out quite differently with the bullpen we have now.

Friday, July 18

Florida 6, Chicago 0

Pitchers: Matt Clement (3 ER on 6 H in 6 IP) vs. Mark Redman (0 ER on 4 H in 7 IP)

Play of the Game: Hollandsworth 2 run double in the 4th to put the Fish on the board.

Notes: Only 3 different Cubs batters manage to get on base.

Verdict: Marlins dominate the Cubbies on home turf.

Saturday, July 19

Chicago Cubs 1, Florida 0

Pitchers: Kerry Wood (0 R on 2 H in 9 IP) vs. Brad Penny (1 R on 4 H in 8 IP)

Play of the Game: Alex Gonzalez sacrifice fly in the 5th to give Chicago their only run.

Notes: Wood throws 130 pitches for his 2nd consecutive complete game win over the Marlins.

Verdict: Classic pitchers duel, and an amazing Penny performance wasted.

Sunday, July 20

Chiacgo Cubs 16, Florida 2

Pitchers: Carlos Zambrano (1 ER on 6 H in 6 2/3 IP) vs. Dontrelle Willis (6 ER on 6 H in 2+ IP)

Play of the Game: Cubs string together 6 straight hits off the D-Train, and laster go on to blow out the Marlins.

Notes: Sosa hits a HR into the upperdeck of PPS.

Verdict: Willis, who looked on track in the first two innings, lost his concentration and control after returning in the 3rd from a long rain delay. The Cubs embarrass the home Fish with a whopping 20 hits.
