Noticing a mechanical glitch, righty alters velocity of fastball

WASHINGTON -- Part of the learning curve for young starters is competing on nights when not everything is clicking.

Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco dealt with a mechanical glitch in his delivery on Saturday night in a no-decision against the Nationals. The 24-year-old right-hander's velocity was down a bit, hitting 93 mph once, but regularly in the 88-89 mph range.

Nolasco struggled with his breaking ball, and he said he was pulling across his body in his release.

Still, he gave up one run in four innings, and his night ended after 65 pitches because of the first of two lengthy rain delays.

Nolasco noted that when he was behind in the count, say in a 2-0 situation, instead of trying to throw 93 mph on the corners, he took a bit off his velocity.

"I have to stay closed on my front side," he said. "The ball was cutting over the plate."

Nolasco will work on refining his delivery in his side throwing session before his next start, on Thursday at Pittsburgh.

"I'd have liked to see him not have that rain delay," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "But for four innings, he battled through a lot of different conditions. It was rainy. He wasn't sharp. But he kept us in the ballgame.

"I'd say a majority of the time, if [pitchers] have 34 starts, the times they have their good stuff might be 10 or 12."

so wait is it a mechanical problem as to why he is throwing 88-89 or did he do it on purpose lol????
