So who belives that conservation needs to be put to the top of The Agenda?

 

I never really did till I took a trip down to a place called Safari Todd's in Christmas Florida.

 

Just to hear the story of the florida panther and be able to pet and hold one was just amazing and after that you hear the story, your heart breaks.

 

He also brings up a good point, how can Conservation not be a top agena when Filtered, purified water costs more than Gas.

 

It's no longer a case of you should recycle, you NEED to recycle because I hate to see the road we are on. Just my two cents.

Its funny...Americans are so wasteful we dont even realize it.

 

 

We put so much junk into our soils that we are killing it.

 

 

We dont even realize that. All we ever hear about is air pollution and occassionally water pollution.

 

Soil pollution is just as severe and just as vital to this world as the previous two. Granted there are other types of pollution that I have not mentioned, but are still very important to understand.

 

Conservation of all resources is necessary. The funniest thing that I have yet to truly understand is this 'need' for bottled water. Sure there are impurities in water, the impurities are not necessarily bad for you...when I go on retreat up in the Texas Hill Country the water is full of minerals, so many dont like it...but its really good for you....

 

 

Now I know...there are some bad impurities in water and thats due to use screwing around and polluting the water. Still water filtration systems are more cost efficent and better for the environment than constantly buying a new bottle of water every damn time.

 

We HAVE to recycle, but thats only a start. We have to educate the people on why we need to recycle and conserve our resources. Bush has failed to grasp this concept.

 

But I won't make this political....thats not the point Rune is making.

 

 

I want to see more recycled materials everywhere, especially roadways. Its been done and its very effective.

 

 

Me...I buy a bottle of water maybe once every 6 months. I have a Brita filtration system in my apartment and just refill my bottle. Not only do we need to recycle...but reusing is just as important. You CAN reuse things.

Well I had to drink bottled down in Florida because too me it tasted funky.

 

The thing that people forget that, one form of pollution can throw off the entire system. Urban Sprawl, Deforestation(sp) and just flat out crap being pumped into any area they can find is just destroying us.

 

I don't want this to be political, but somebody in a high ranking position whether it be A Dem or Rep needs to step and force this issue because it's not going away.

 

It's gotten so bad that it's no longer some unknown bird in The Amazon that is becoming extinct but animals that we all know are almost a lock to be gone very soon but yet we kick back and consider conservation, something we should do but we can go on without it for a little longer.

 

For anyone reading that is not involved right now, begin to read about sprawl, pollution and go to programs about it, they really can change the way you think, I can say that from experience.

 

Either School Districts force this idea on our kids either that or I guarantee you, we will be in a casket that we stand no chance of getting out of.

The article about the golf pesticides talks about cancer, does the pesticides spread through the air because i live near a golf course and defintely do not wanna get cancer. I skimmed throught the article so i didnt see anythin of that but is it possible. i know i have seen news pieces on people who lived near a toxic waster or sumthin like that and the rate of cancer was high, so is this the same thing?

Is is far less expensive and far more energy efficient to recycle aluminum than to extract it from bauxite.

 

The same is true with recycled plastics.

 

Paper recycling is currently slightly less energy efficient (there are new methods being developed), but does preserve natural resources.

First off there is some misconception of terms.

 

 

I will get to those misconceptions shortly.

 

 

But first I must address Billy Goat. Are you simply misinformed, are you just trying to create waves, or are you just not very intelligent? It has to be one of those three.

 

I have never seen any news story saying that recycling is bad in any way, in terms of using more fossil fuels and resources than virgin materials.

 

Let me give you a few facts.

 

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough electricity to power a TV or a 100-watt light bulb for three hours. FACT

 

American consumers and industry throw away enough aluminum in a year to rebuild our entire airplane commercial fleet every three months. FACT

Looking for a good definition of conservation is problematic.

 

But I will go with this definition:

 

Conservation is generally considered to be but one aspect of an overall preservation program. The aim of conservation is to stabilize and to prevent further damage or deterioration, thereby allowing a tape to realize a longer useful life. Such measures may include cleaning the media and maintaining playback equipment as well as following proper handling and storage procedures. Providing users with access copies of original materials is a crucial means of protecting the originals from damage through use.

 

 

Generally conservation is considered an older term, one that is not really in vogue as much as it was in the first half of last century. Come the 1960s conservation began to evolve into environmentalism and continues to evolve in that manner to this day.

 

I think a better term would be environmentalism if we are going to incorporate all these various ideas into what we are looking at doing. Recycling, conserving resources, reusing items. I dont think saying conservation is necessarily including everything that is being discussed here.

 

Environmentalism far too often gets associated with hippies, vegetarianism, liberalism, and so many far left ideas. In reality, save for our current President many people on the right practice some phase of environmentalism, perhaps not to the extent of others, but it does exist.

when I think of conservation, I think of conserving land (i.e. quit with the developing of forests, swamps, etc....forget destroying land for landfills, etc.)

 

obviously there are other forms of conservation....thats just what comes into my mind when thinking conservation.

Where land conservation is one of the most obvious ways to conserve.

 

As a society by and large we have yet to figure this out yet. Sadly.
