Raul Castro's wife dies

Havana on Monday announced the death of the wife of interim leader Ra?l Castro. Vilma Esp?n was the daughter of a wealthy family who rose to become the island's virtual first lady and head of the Cuban Women's Federation for decades.

 

''With profound pain, the direction of our party and government communicates to the people that compa?era Vilma Esp?n Guillois . . . died in this capital today at 4:14 p.m. after a turn for the worse in the last weeks of the long illness that affected her,'' the Cuban News Agency reported.

 

The report described her as a heroine of the clandestine fight against dictator Fulgencio Batista and ``tireless fighter for the emancipation of women and the defense of the rights of children.''

 

Espin married Ra?l Castro shortly after the revolution's triumph in 1959. She served often as first lady for leader Fidel Castro, who always kept his own family in the background. She was reported last year to be suffering from osteoporosis and Alzaheimer's disease.

 

Espin and Ra?l Castro had four children.
