August 5, 200817 yr I have a WD external hard drive. When I turn the computer on the external hard drive always turns on automatically.. that is until today. Now the little icon on the lower right hand corner is missing and I can't access the files on the external. This is the first time this happens in the 18 months I've had this thing. I haveen't moved anythign so it's not a loose cable or anything like that. Anyone know how to get the external going again? Thanks.

Is the hard drive turned on? Knowing what I know (18 months old), it probably has a big round button with a light around it on the front. If the light isn't on, then press that button.

August 5, 200817 yr here's another question: do you properly eject your external hard drive after you are done using it? i had a non-problem yesterday when i accidently unplugged my hard drive while it was on 'chipper' (for those that don't know, chipper is my loyal macbook). if you eject your hard drive while writing something, that could be a big problem.

I never "eject" it or anything else. I turn the computer on and it comes on... I shut off the computer and it shuts off. Other than like that I've never turned it on or off.
August 5, 200817 yr My external hard drive died because of a power surge when I left it switched on and then plugged it in. Have you had any surges? Try another power plug if that doesn't work.
August 6, 200817 yr Author Try another power plug if that doesn't work. Thank you, MaXx. I downloaded a couple of programs and tried plugging and unpluggings things but nothing worked until your power plug suggestion.
August 6, 200817 yr I was actually about to suggest just unplugging and plugging the USB cable from the hard drive to the computer. But as long as it's working... :mischief
August 7, 200817 yr Author I was actually about to suggest just unplugging and plugging the USB cable from the hard drive to the computer. But as long as it's working... :mischief I had tried plugging and unplugging the USB cable and it didn't fix it. The strange thing with the power plug is that with the original plug the external was powered on so I didn't think that could be the problem so I hadn't changed the plug until MaXx suggested it.
