August 31, 200817 yr Just a list of numbers I found interesting regarding the Marlins this year, this can tangent into whatever debates anyone wants to take them to: For anyone not familiar, the numbers are Batting Average/On Base Percentage/Slugging Percentage, OPS is OBP+SLG%... I'd convert it to GPA or EqA or some other "exotic" stat, but I'm too lazy "Situational" Hitting Bases Empty: .239/.303/.412 - .715 OPS With RISP: .257/.349/.425 - .774 OPS Bases Loaded: .244/.282/.359 - .641 OPS Runner on Third, 2 Outs: .246/.407/.445 - .852 OPS (given the insanely high OBP in the previous situation, I thought I'd add the next situation as an "And then..." type-thing) First and Third: .303/.377/.515 - .892 OPS Runner on Third, *< 2 Outs: .307/.335/.449 - .784 OPS 2 Outs, RISP: .251/.377/.441 - .818 OPS Hits By Direction RHB Pulled: .491/.486/1.009 - 1.496 OPS RHB OppField: .283/.277/.366 - .644 OPS LHB Pulled: .399/.399/.820 - 1.219 OPS LHB OppField: .296/.291/.445 - .736 OPS
August 31, 200817 yr I don't get how they come up with the numbers for BA and OBP for Hits By Direction? Please explain. :confused Aren't those already hits?

I am guessing that not only the hits factor in but all the balls that were hitted in a certain direction regardless of being hits or outs.

None of those hit balls are walks.

None of those hit balls are walks. In the cases above, the OBP is always lower than the BA for Hits By Direction. That tells me they're ignoring walks on the OBP and figuring in SFs that are hit in that direction.
August 31, 200817 yr A whole lot of mental masturbation if you ask me... Bottom line: the Marlins' offense is streaky and more or less ineffective (especially of late).
August 31, 200817 yr Author In the cases above, the OBP is always lower than the BA for Hits By Direction. That tells me they're ignoring walks on the OBP and figuring in SFs that are hit in that direction. This is exactly right... As for details regarding the offense, yes, it's streaky, that's entirely the point, but for people to say that as a team we fail at situational hitting or don't "go the other way"... well, we suck when we go the other way and we're pretty much good in those "situational" situations... we're just streaky, so it looks like we're incapable of doing them, when in fact, on a given day, we're probably VERY capable
