  1. I'm really happy for The Hawk. I think he deserved it. I think Alomar and Blyleven will be in and deserve to be but I never liked Alomar even before he spit on Hirshbeck.
  2. Damarcus Beasley scored with a sensational strike for my lot on Tuesday night in a 3-0 win. Thats good. I would like to see him regain his form for the World Cup. His international carreer for the US has been inconsistent at best and even embarassing at times.
  3. Roma wins the Eternal City Derby 1-0 over Lazio. :cheers
  4. World Cup Draw I dont think a bad draw for the US. 2nd in the group would be reasonable. Brazil may have the toughest group of the top seeds. slovenia and england are both better than the US. they won't make it out of the group stage...again. France probably has the easiest group but they've been inconsistent so it might be challenging for them. Slovenia better than the US ... OOOOKKKK. It will be a huge disappointment if the US don't advance out of group with the draw they got. Slovenia was arguably one of the weakest teams out of that pot and Algeria is a joke. In fact, outside of France's group it is the weakest draw IMO. I agree. Slovenia is lucky to be in the World Cup. Now granted it wouldnt surprise me if the US choked against one of the weaker teams but on paper you cant say Slovenia is a better team. As for France...I think they must have naked pictures of Sepp Blatter with a donkey or something because they have had a path to the finals practically paved for them by FIFA. From unfair seedings to hand balls to easiest draw...this team didnt deserve to get through qualifying much less in to the WC.

  6. I know most dont follow it but big win for Fenerbaçe over their rival You mean Galatasaray? :whistle
  7. Manchester United meets Liverpool tomorrow. Michael Owen will get a not so warm reception I'm betting. Liverpool needs to right the ship but without Gerrard or Torres I don't think it will happen this Sunday even if Rooney sits. I think Benitez will be gone soon. Latest reports are that Torres will play I think. Even so, I expect Man Utd to win by a goal. The problem with Liverpool is that they are just so reliant on Gerrard and Torres. Without them they are hopeless. Guys like Riera, Babel, Lucas and Voronin are not good enough to play for a "top 4" club like Liverpool. Well I'm pissed. I lost my feed of the game and it looks like it was an exciting one as Liverpool pulls it out 2-0. Torres comes back and lifts his club with the deciding goal. Hopefully that will turn their season around. Benitez is safe for now it seams.
  8. Real Madrid travels to face my favorite little underdog team Sporting de Gijon (where my maternal family is from). I hope they keep it close but the Merengues are sure to be pi$$ed after losing to Milan this week. Sporting has had a nice start to this season after just getting promoted last year and barely staying up. :cheers Sporting and Real Madrid in a 0-0 draw. A moral victory for the Asturians. They definitely outlpayed Real Madrid in the first half and held their own.

  11. Wow what a day in the Champions League. Barcelona stunned by FK Rubin. Liverpool falls to Lyon. And Schnellders...What happened at Ibrox?.. Rangers lose 4-1 to Unirea?..I don't even know where that is! Our team is so bad just now. No pace or skill at all in our attacks. We had a penalty saved in the 1st half, which would of put us up 2-1 and probably led us to victory. Considering our last 2 performances we have no chance of qualifying, however if we get our act together I still think we could. Both Rangers and Celtic were competitive in Europe until the last year or 2, as for some reason the gulf in class has widened. The quality of Scottish football today is appalling. Ultimately it boils down to the financial side of the game. Rangers and Celtic get roughly £2m per season for our league's television deal, whereas in the English Premiership, teams are guaranteed £18m, with Man Utd earning £25m last season. Have they ever considered having a United Kingdom League? Seems like it might help strengthen British football in general. I don't know. Another upset today as AC Milan (coming off of a victory over my Giallorossi) defeats Real Madrid at the Bernabeu no less. And Bordeaux beats a struggling Munich team (not really an upset but you have to feel for the Bayern fans).

  13. Ireland v France Portugal v Bosnia Greece v Ukraine Russia v Slovenia Think the seedings had anything to do with FIFA wanting to make sure Ronaldo makes it to the World Cup? The good news for Bosnia is that Portugal has played lousy at home during the qualifying. I think the Irish got the raw end of things but as erratic as France has been they still have a shot. Greece and Ukraine should be an interesting battle.
  14. Did anyone see Darren Bent's comedy goal as Sunderland beat Liverpool 1-0 at the weekend? The ball struck a giant balloon/beach ball right in front of Pepe Reina, which changed the direction of the shot and went in for a goal. In the replay it looked like Reina tried to save the beach ball rather than the football lol. Yeah why didn't the referee stop the match. Goal shouldn't have counted.
  15. In my eyes it would be best if Russia, France, Portugal and Ireland make it through the playoffs. Nothing against the other 4 nations but for the biggest football spectable, these teams need to get there. Ireland sucks. it would be best for bosnia to advance to bring back relevance in the balkans. yugoslavia was ranked 3rd in the world before the war in 1991 that broke the team apart and to have serbia and bosnia in the world cup would be crazy especially if they played each other because it could get ugly in the stands Their team isn't great but the Irish fans would add a lot to the atmosphere of the tournament, as just like us Scots, they are always up for a drink and a party. I kind of agree with Schnellders on this. Hard to picture a World Cup without the Irish. In my opinion neither France nor Portugal has proven they should be there in spite of the obvious talent but it will be weird if neither makes it out of the playoffs. Andrei Arshavin is another great player who could be left out of the WC if Russia doesn't make it. I wouldn't mind Bosnia but I think Ukraine has the best shot of the unseeded teams to get through. Do you mean this specific one or in general? Ireland has only made 3 world cups and besides 1990 they haven't done much. Both I guess. Only three WC but 3 out of the last 5 and Euro 1988. Quarterfinals (?) in 1990 and I think they made second round in both 94 and 2002. I know that's not much but they've had a solid national team for the last 20 years especially in the 90's, which pretty much encompasses most of my international soccer watching history. :lol

  17. There were early reports from the USSF that they were career ending, but they have since backed off. They may have backed off but a femur and a tibia fracture in the same leg will be tough to come back from and reach the same form. It's too bad. I like him as a player. On the other hand he will survive his injuries. He's lucky to be alive. Agreed, him being able to lead a normal life after this is by far the most important thing here. But it's impossible not to have thoughts about him playing him again in the back of your head. I think returning from these kinds of injuries depends on how bad the player wants it -- and from everything I've read he hasn't needed surgery on his leg, leading me to believe it's not nearly as serious as an Alan Smith or Eduardo injury. Yeah I'm rooting for him. Especially being a New Hampshire kid.
  18. wayne rooney is my most hated player so obviously i hope that england loses in the most painful way possible preferably to the hands of one of the yugoslavian countries. Wayne Rooney, Cashley Cole, Steven Gerrard, and the list goes on. The more painful the better. I think besides the US I root for Australia and South Korea. While not the most talented teams, they are aggressive teams. I don't mind Gerrard too much, but obviously you will hate him being an Everton fan. I will add to that list Rio Ferdinand who I really don't like. But top of the list of most hated players has to be Ashley, with my hate magnified by the fact he is married to one of the hottest chicks on the planet. And he cheated on her, and she took him back. Never understood why someone would cheat on their partner when they are as absolutely stunning as Cheryl I like Gerrard. For some reason I hate John Terry. Rooney is a dink and Cole is too.
  19. Argentina qualifies and Uruguay goes to the playoff. They saved Maradona's job. I'm happy they made it, mainly for the players. Many of the best in the world. It would not be the same without them in it. But Uruguay should handle the Concacaf 4th place team. So they should make it. And Portugal makes the playoff so Ronaldo still has a chance to get in. No such luck for Ibrahimovic and Sweden.

  22. im glad chile is in I would like to see Ecuador make a second consecutive world cup and I would like to see CONCACAF get 4 teams again. It would be nice but I can't see a fourth CONCACAF team getting past the 5th CONMEBOL team but you never know the way things have gone in South America so far. I hope Argentina makes it but if they don't I would take pleasure in seeing Maradona humiliated. And I would love to see Uruguay win the next match.
  23. Being that there is less than a year until the World Cup I thought we should have a separate thread from club soccer (at least for this year leading up to the WC). Qualifying has gotten down to crunch time and there are alot of stories. England (with one of it's best teams in a while) and Germany are in. Netherlands and Spain are in. Italy on the verge of being in. Brazil and Paraguay in with alot of teams jockeying for the 3rd,4th and 5th spots(5th gets playoff against CONCACAF 4th). The most compelling story in my mind is Argentina's disastrous performance over the last few months. Their chances of qualifying are in peril and the bloom is off of the Maradona rose, at least as far as manager. So with Portugal's weak showing and Argentina's poor play, we may be looking at a World Cup without the worlds two best players, in Ronaldo and Messi. ( and Sweden is looking like they'll miss out so no Ibra either) My not too scientific prediction is that we'll see Spain, Germany and Brazil in the semifinals along with...wait for it... an African team. Of course it all depends on the draw etc. And no I don't think England will make the semifinals. While they have great talent , especially Gerrard and Lampard, I agree with the consenus of the English fans that they don't play well as a team. In spite of Fabio Capello, they are very disorganized in the back IMO, and in the World Cup that will cost you.
  24. We know from the Girardi year that the FO likes to tell the manager which players they would like to see where. They fired Girardi because he resisted and tried to buck the system. (Not saying whether the FO was right or wrong in doing so). It seems to me that Fredi has allowed the FO to dictate his roster/lineup and he's been a good corporate employee so it seems unfair to fire him for the team not making the playoffs.
