October 5, 200916 yr Not without a real good reason. He does need to better manage the bullpen though next year.
October 5, 200916 yr Of course he should be canned. 1) I'm not sure how the pitching staff could have been handled more poorly this season, which includes the total inability to keep opposing baserunners from running wild; 2) I was amazed at the consistent failure to move runners up (what a poor bunting team!); I was disappointed about the failure of the team to utilize speed on the bases ... Hanley should have attempted to steal much more often, and Bonifacio and Maybin ... if they aren't running almost every time they get on base, what is the point of even playing them? With the Marlins, it wasn't "Speed Kills", it was "Speed Bores."
October 5, 200916 yr Whatever... we're a very flawed team that won 87 games. I think the biggest disappointment of the season is the absence of the front office doing ANYTHING after we acquired Nick Johnson.
October 5, 200916 yr He has done a great job and if they let him go he will end up in Atlanta and we will have to see him too often and realize it was a bad move.
October 5, 200916 yr No. Right now he really is "allegedly" being fired without just cause. Give Fredi and Co. a manageable payroll to work with like the rest of the major leagues and we would've been a playoff team days before the last game of the season. Seems more like Loria trying to blame somebody for his own failure. Fredi seems to be the fall guy.
October 5, 200916 yr It's amazing to me that we are even talking about this. Who could have done a better job than Gonzalez with the payroll he was working with? If the Marlins fire Gonzalez he will have a new job before the winter is over.
October 5, 200916 yr the more I think about this the less sure I know the answer. when I look at the overall performance I don't think it's anything someone should lose their job over but when I think about things that happened, and even with the knowledge that he and his coaches can only tell player X what to do or pitch, player X is ultimately responsible for his actions, he is the manager and made the decision to put player x in that situation in the first place (and no for all you haters, I'm not talking about Bonifacio). but because I know also I don't know what is going on in the clubhouse and who might be injured or have a cold, or a blister or a fight with his wife or his kids are sick and he's been up all night, in the end I don't believe I am qualified to vote either way, which is not a cop out but rather recognition I don't have enough facts available to me to confidently vote yea or nay.
October 5, 200916 yr We know from the Girardi year that the FO likes to tell the manager which players they would like to see where. They fired Girardi because he resisted and tried to buck the system. (Not saying whether the FO was right or wrong in doing so). It seems to me that Fredi has allowed the FO to dictate his roster/lineup and he's been a good corporate employee so it seems unfair to fire him for the team not making the playoffs.
October 5, 200916 yr Absolutely not. Look, a lot of my posts refer to the fact that I do not like Fredi Gonzalez. But to fire a guy who statistically has actually had a lot of success, without a true stirring the pot moment like Girardi, just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. I don't think this team will really make it anywhere with it's current mentality. But Fredi is just a part of that, and when we stop rushing out incomplete teams maybe we can truly criticize.
October 5, 200916 yr Some of you just mention payroll like if the team is mediocre just because of payroll. This team didn't perform above expectations. If anything, they performed to expectations. For every overachiever on the team this year, I can give you an underachiever, as well. He didn't do anything spectacularly this year. My answer to this question is "who cares?" If they want to fire his ass...fire his ass. He'll be out of here anyways, once Bobby Cox is done in Atlanta. It really does not matter, so long as we put a competitive team out on the field (which the Marlins are, right now).

For the past two days people are saying "how can you expect him to do anymore given the payroll". The payroll wasn't an excuse when the Marlins were in contention until the last few days of the season, but all of a sudden it's the reason we didn't make the playoffs? If 5 games go differently, the Marlins win the Wild Card and nobody is talking about how low the payroll is. A lot of teams finished below us with 2 or 3 times the payroll, so I fail to see why the payroll is now an excuse. As for Fredi, I also say who cares? Despite the win/loss record the past two seasons is anyone really impressed with the job he has done? Besides, I believe that if he does get fired, it isn't going to be based on his performance. I could be wrong, but my feeling is that Loria doesn't like the fact that after 3 years as manager, he still lives in Atlanta, has no real ties to South Florida, and his ultimate goal is to replace Bobby Cox. Just my read on the situation.

October 5, 200916 yr I said 'yes', but I'm kind of this way and that about the whole thing. The FO's poor decision making probably cost the team more wins than Fredi himself, but I still feel like Fredi is a really poor game manager. I think it would depend on who would replace him. Right now I would be interested in having Eric Wedge run the team.

Based on record, Girardi wouldn't have been fired. Wins and losses are important, but they don't tell the entire story. Perhaps they aren't happy with how he handled his bullpen, or his lineup, or how he dealt with players, etc. You can look at his record and say he did a fine job, but that is not always the case. There could also be personal differences with the front office or Loria.

October 5, 200916 yr No. Yes sometimes his bullpen management is questionable to say the least but 87 wins isn't a bad season. It is not Fredi's fault that we spend so few $$$ on players - by this I mean Fredi cannot be blamed for the failings of youngsters such as Maybin, Miller and Volstad (and also the early season Ricky Nolasco). We relied so heavily on these guys coming into the season, without the backup insurance of a veteran starter or 2 and because they failed, we failed.

But is another year of Fredi and then a new manager better than letting him go now? Does it hurt the team to hold on for a year if they think he will just leave or is it better to get another coach in place now (if the inevitable is true)?
October 5, 200916 yr second flamarlins.com article today on the "inconsistencies" of the rotation and pitching generally. Hmm...

October 5, 200916 yr Honestly, it wouldn't bother me. At all. I still can't forget all the moronic moves he made like when he walked Bako to face Werth. Or his obsession with Pinto and using him so much in close games.

If they are firing because they didn't like his lineups (though the word on the street has always been that they basically dictated the lineups) or the way he handled the bullpen, that's fine with me. But to to fire him because we didn't make the playoffs, when we had a flimsy bullpen, 2 good pitchers, and a hole at 3rd base with little to no depth to fill them is just wrong. Fredi shouldn't be the FO's scapegoat.
October 5, 200916 yr Why is this even a topic ?? The dude had 1 consistent starter to work with all year, and no closer. He had a winning record against everyone in the NL East. We were in the playoff hunt until the very end and we won 87 games. NO ... end of story.
