Takatsu, Japan's career saves leader, becomes free agent

Nov. 6, 2003

SportsLine.com wire reports

TOKYO -- Shingo Takatsu, Japan's career saves leader, filed for free agency and is interested in pitching for a major-league team.

Takatsu's application was received by the Japanese baseball commissioner's office Thursday. Joe Urbon of Octagon said he will represent the 34-year-old right-hander

Takatsu, who throws sidearm and relies on a sinkerball, led the Central League with 34 saves for the Yakult Swallows. He had 260 saves, passing Kazuhiro Sasaki this year for the No. 1 spot.
