The pour will constitute the first 16 feet of the 40-foot tall rebar cage that was erected last week. When complete, the elliptical shaped column will stand approximately 8 feet wide by 15 feet long and will rise to 130 feet. The column is one of the twelve super columns that will support the 8,300 ton Retractable Roof Structure, which is approximately the weight of the Eiffel Tower in France. "This important milestone continues to signal the progress of the ballpark and we are pleased that an increasing number of workers are contributing to the continued success of this project," said David Samson, President of the Florida Marlins. About the Super Columns and Retractable Roof The construction of each of the 12 super columns will be divided into six phases. A phase is composed of preassembling the rebar cage horizontally on the ground, hoisting the rebar cage vertically into position, placing utility conduits, placing the formwork that shapes and contain the concrete, placing the concrete, and then removing the formwork after the concrete has reached its curing time. The process is repeated until the columns have reached the final elevation. The retractable roof consists of three panels elevated over the playing field supported by a two track system on the North and South Side of the Ballpark. The first column that will be poured this Friday is part of the North Track system which will be approximately 30 feet taller than the south columns when complete. I thought the bold part was interesting. It gives you a better idea of what they are doing when you look at the webcam.
