Perez bolsters Rays bench

By MARC TOPKIN, Times Staff Writer

ST. PETERSBURG - The Devil Rays took a step toward improving their bench Saturday by agreeing to terms with Eduardo Perez on a two-year contract.

Perez, the 34-year-old son of Hall of Famer Tony Perez, can play first and third base and leftfield and rightfield. He hit .285 with 11 homers and 41 RBIs in 105 games last season for St. Louis.

Perez, a right-handed hitter, was a first-round pick out of Florida State by Anaheim in 1991. He has played parts of 10 seasons in the majors with the Angels, Reds and Cardinals, and spent the 2001 season in Japan.

The Rays like Perez because he is versatile and because he hits very well against left-handers - .353 last season.

If memory serves, .374.

Great bench player.

I thought Billy Beane was the genius who gets these guys. He's overrated. He's lucky to have good pitching.
