December 29, 200322 yr 12/29/2003 3:23 PM ET Rays agree to terms with catcher Brook Fordyce St. Petersburg, FL -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays today agreed to terms with veteran free agent catcher Brook Fordyce on a one-year major league contract, pending the completion of a physical examination. Further terms were not disclosed. Fordyce, 33, spent the last three and one-half seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. He played in a career-high 108 games last season batting .273 with six home runs and 31 RBI. He ranked third among American League catchers with a .996 fielding percentage. An eight-year major league veteran, Fordyce is a lifetime .263 hitter in 569 games with the Mets, Reds, White Sox and Orioles. His best season came in 2000 as a member of the White Sox and Orioles when he set career highs in average (.301) and home runs (14) while matching his career best in RBI (49). He was originally the Mets' third round selection in the 1989 June Draft out of St. Bernard High School in Uncasville, Connecticut. He currently resides in Stuart, Florida.
