6 hours ago6 hr My take. No, we don't need that. This play wouldn't happen if the Dodgers guy (Muncy) just turns off to his right (foul territory) like normal instead of turning left and trying to semi tackle the guy (whether that was his intention or not, that's what it looked like real time, let alone slowing down). The D'backs player (Vargas) is already turning to his right toward the infield when Muncy pivots to his left toward the other guy.
6 hours ago6 hr I do also understand it's one of those split second decisions that could go either way, but still, this play wouldn't have the same result (they'd both be fine) if he'd go to the right side of the base.See here as they're running up, ok, they're headed to the same spot, in theory.....but following momentum, Vargas is running toward the infield, with Muncy down the line.As they get closer, Vargas is already pivoting to his right (infield), while Muncy also starts going to his left.If Muncy just goes to the right (foul territory), the situation doesn't happen....see in this next frame, his left foot is on the far left of the bag. He's leaving no room for Vargas to make a play/run off....I guess it's possible Muncy thought Vargas would just continue toward foul territory since he started more to that side, and therefore went to his left toward the infield (again, split second move, similar to if you're walking and do the "dance" with someone going the opposite way). How often does this situation actually happen, I wonder, to necessitate an extra bag?IMO, that also opens up a can of worms for baserunners and fielders alike, who go off of feel, and if they're feeling a base, what if they're on the orange one, and not the white one? What counts as out and safe? Edited 6 hours ago6 hr by rmc523
