Bracey Wright goes for 28 as the Hoosiers win a big game on the road!

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Bracey Wright scored 28 points -- 20 in the second half as Indiana repeatedly beat back challenges -- to lead the Hoosiers past Ohio State 69-61 Tuesday night.

 

The Hoosiers (9-6, 3-1) began the night in a five-way tie for the top spot in the Big Ten and gained, at least for a night, the lead by themselves.

 

Wright, second in the conference in scoring, was dogged by at least one defender all over the court but still hit 7 of 17 shots from the field, 4 of 7 3-pointers and 10 of 11 free throws. He also had three rebounds and three assists.

 

His running mate at guard, Marshall Strickland, added 19 points as the Hoosiers won their third game in a row.

 

Terence Dials scored 19 points and Velimir Radinovic 16 for the Buckeyes (9-8, 1-3), who began the night a game out of first and a game out of last in the Big Ten.

 

In a physically punishing game, the teams combined for 47 fouls, 31 turnovers and 51 free throws. Ohio State had trouble all night matching up with the Hoosiers' quickness while Indiana couldn't muster a defense against Dials and Radinovic inside as the Buckeyes continually pounded the ball inside.

 

Ohio State took its last lead at 48-46 on two free throws by Nick Dials with 9:27 left. Indiana drew even on a pair of Wright foul shots before Strickland hit two more.

 

The Hoosiers led 59-53 on Wright's quick spin and layup with 4:42 left but turned the ball over on their next six possessions. Still, Ohio State couldn't gain ground because of ballhandling miscues of its own.

 

With some pressure from the Indiana defense -- but also several unforced errors -- the Buckeyes made just one of their next seven shots from the field, missed three of four free throws and had three turnovers over the next four minutes.

 

Wright made two free throws with 1:38 left to push the lead to 61-56, more than enough to get the Hoosiers to the finish.

 

Indiana hit half of its 14 3-pointers and made 22 of 25 free throws. The Buckeyes made just 2 of 16 behind the arc.

 

The Hoosiers led by as many as 11 points in the first half thanks to a 9-0 run capped by Wright's 3-pointer and another perimeter jumper. But the Buckeyes came back to score nine of the half's final 11 points to trail 26-22 at the break.

 

The Hoosiers missed their final seven shots of the half from the field -- all after Ohio State switched to a box-and-one defense on Wright.

We lost because:

 

A) We can't shoot free throws.

 

B) We didn't get the ball inside to Dials in the last 4 minutes of the game.

 

He was awesome tonight and they just quit going to him at the end. Indiana tried as hard as they could do give the game away (they looked AWFUL down the stretch, turnovers, fouls, Mike Davis has some serious work to do), but we couldn't shoot from the outside and ignored Dials. We're clearly getting better though. We need to run our whole offense through Dials and Radinovic, they're the best big man combo in the conference.

 

Also, the refs were HORRIBLE. It was awful both ways, so it's not like it cost either team, but they would call touch nonsense calls and then wouldn't call obvious stuff. There was a sequence in the first half where 5 different players hit the floor and nothing was called. Awful, awful stuff.

 

Seats were awesome, atmosphere in the Schott has gotten much better. It's was only about 75% full, but it was louder than it used to be when it was 100% full and filled with alumni and old people who were there to be seen.
