February 2, 200422 yr MIAMI -- Negotiations are progressing between the Marlins and free agent Wil Cordero and the 32-year-old veteran could sign in a day or two, a source told MLB.com. Cordero played the last two seasons with the Expos, and is being coveted to provide depth and some power. The first baseman/outfielder hit .278 with 16 homers and 71 RBIs with Montreal in 2003. Cordero and his agent, California-based Jeff Moorad, recently were at Pro Player Stadium talking contract. Signing Cordero would provide an experienced first baseman in case 24-year-old Hee Seop Choi struggles. Cordero is a .276 career hitter with 121 lifetime homers in 1,191 games. Cordero could also platoon for the left-handed hitting Choi, and he also can play left and right field. Cordero played in 130 games for the Expos last season, and in 436 at-bats he had a .450 slugging percentage and a .354 on-base percentage.
