Maddux is gonna be a.....

Featured Replies

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Greg Maddux is going back where he started, deciding to sign with the Chicago Cubs, The Associated Press learned Tuesday night.

The four-time Cy Young winner agreed to a $24 million, three-year deal with the Cubs, rejoining the team that gave him his start in the majors, a source close the negotiations said on condition of anonymity.

The deal is pending a physical, but the 37-year-old Maddux is expected to report Wednesday with the rest of the Cubs pitchers and catchers.

The addition of Maddux, who is just 11 wins shy of 300, gives the Cubs one of the strongest rotations in the game. He'll join Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Matt Clement and Carlos Zambrano - a foursome that took the Cubs within five outs of the World Series a year ago.

Maddux may not be the pitcher he was in his youth, but he is still one of the game's most effective ones. He went 16-11 with a 3.96 ERA last season - his 16th straight year with at least 15 wins. He is second among active pitchers with 289 wins, 21 behind Roger Clemens.

He is 289-163 with a 2.89 ERA in his 18-year career.

Very interesting. I had heard that the Yanks had offered a 3 year, $30 million deal, but I don't really like that 3rd year. I think the Cubs are going to regret that extra year.

Ramp is obviously happy because the Cubs have an average infield defensively. Lee has a gold-glove and Gonzalez could win one someday, but Ramirez is as bad as it gets and neither Grudzy nor Walker are very good at second. And I don't see Wrigley helping his cause, either.

He'll be decent, but never himself. And if that third year is what it took to get a deal done, they shouldn't have done it. Boras would have been forced to cave.

Great, so the Cubs will have to rob the Pirates again midseason to clinch the Central that they were goign to run away with last year?

He almost had an ERA at 4 while pitching in a very generous pitchers park and he allowed 24 homerruns. Expect both numbers to go up.

IMO stupid move by the Cubs. Maybe if they got him for 2 years and less money but 3 years 24mil is way to much money for a guy who will be 40 by the 3rd year of his contract.

I dont think the Cubs had much choice. It seems they have absolutely no confidence in Juan Cruz as a starter and will probably use him strictly in the pen. Kind of a shame. I think he could cut it as a starter, but would need time. I dont think Maddux will be his 'usual' self, but he will be solid and chew up innings and will help the pitchers understand pitching better. Solid move. And I will get to see it all up close when I move to Chi-town. Cant wait for the Marlins to come up there and beat up on them...
