February 19, 200422 yr Henson trade offer expected By Alex Marvez Staff Writer Posted February 19 2004 INDIANAPOLIS -- The Dolphins are expected to enter the bidding for quarterback Drew Henson of the Houston Texans. An NFL source said Wednesday that Houston General Manager Charley Casserly has presented a trade proposal to the Dolphins for Henson, a heralded prospect the Texans are shopping for a high draft choice. The Dolphins are expected to meet with Texans management this week for further discussions at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Dolphins Senior Vice President Rick Spielman declined comment Wednesday. The Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday that the Texans had received acceptable trade parameters from another team for permission to speak with Henson, who spent the past two years in the New York Yankees' minor league system after leaving the University of Michigan as a junior. Those provisions don't mean a trade is imminent, but Houston wanted suitors to prove they were serious about a deal before being granted permission to schedule an individual workout and visit with Henson. The Dolphins also are believed to have interest in Washington quarterback Patrick Ramsey, who could be on the trading block with the Redskins set to acquire Jacksonville's Mark Brunell. Ramsey's fate with Washington should become clearer this week when agent Jimmy Sexton meets with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. Quarterbacks are not the Dolphins' only offseason focus. Besides scouting more than 300 college players at the combine, the Dolphins also have meetings planned today through Sunday with agents of players the team has under contract. The Dolphins have to trim roughly $17 million off their salary cap by the start of the free-agent signing period March 3. It's believed that as many as a dozen will be asked to restructure their contracts to create cap room or risk being released. "This is the only place where all the agents are together at one time," said Spielman, who enters his first combine with authority over personnel matters after being promoted last month to general manager. "You can actually get some face-to-face time with them and have a lot of meaningful discussions and hopefully come up with some resolutions." The Dolphins also have 17 players slated to become restricted or unrestricted free agents. The biggest name is defensive end Adewale Ogunleye, a restricted free agent who is expected to receive a high tender offer from the Dolphins by March 2 that would require any interested team to surrender their first- and third-round draft choices as compensation. The Dolphins' cap situation makes it highly unlikely that they will match any big-money deal that Ogunleye receives. While Ogunleye did lead the AFC in sacks last season with 15, the Dolphins still have fellow end Jason Taylor (13 sacks) under contract. The Dolphins are likely to add another end through the draft or free agency if Ogunlete leaves. But it's believed the team feels confident in having Jay Williams, David Bowens and Otis Grigsby compete for the starting left end position. The Dolphins also aren't expected to vie for a big-money wide receiver like San Francisco's Terrell Owens, who is to become an unrestricted free agent. The Dolphins believe there is solid receiver depth in the draft and have more pressing needs along the offensive line that must be addressed in free agency. While having to clear $17 million in cap space so soon sounds daunting, the Dolphins have gotten through similar crises before without having to gut their roster. "It's going to be very busy, but it hasn't been any less or more busy than any other year," Spielman said. "You're basically dealing with the same things, whether you want to restructure or if you want to waive the player if you can't come to an agreement. It's basically the same situation with players. It's just different names every year. "But we'll be under the cap and will be able to get far enough under the cap to do some things." Alex Marvez can be reached at amarvez@sun-sentinel.com. Interesting I defintely wouldnt mind let Ogunleye leave if we can get 2 picks out of him. Article
February 19, 200422 yr im confident jay williams can do a great job. come on people, opposite of taylor, just about any1 is bound 2 produce. plus, our defense is stacked anyways.
February 19, 200422 yr Oguleye has Talent AJB34. You cant stick Dave Wannstedt in there and say he'd produce (you said anyone can) The Phins wont go anywhere without an Oline. And One reason the Phins should hate Patriots more? 7 Picks in the 1st 4 Rounds. 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th. (4th and 3rd might be switched, im not sure)
February 19, 200422 yr Author I agree with AJB34. No doubt that Ogunleye has talent and is better than any other option we have at DE opposite of Taylor but hes too much money and we have other pressing needs. The money we save from him could be used for OL and WR. Plus we get 2 picks that could help us in the future and even immediately.

Hes a restricted free agent, we get compensation because of this.

February 20, 200422 yr Jay Williams would not start If Ogunleye goes down. David Bowens would. He is a good DE, remember he was suppose to start 2 seasons ago until Ogunleye had his 8 sack preseason.
February 20, 200422 yr And One reason the Phins should hate Patriots more? 7 Picks in the 1st 4 Rounds. 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th. (4th and 3rd might be switched, im not sure) i think we gave them our 2nd round pick this year so we could get a 3rd round pick last year(which we used to draft Wade Smith). So that's the reason we dont have a 2nd rnder while they ahve 2.
February 20, 200422 yr What team is going to give a 1st and a 3rd for ogunleye? Pretty steep price to pay.
