  1. After digging around quite a bit, it looks like the Marlins have less than $250,000 to spend on Martinez in this signing period. He would be smart to wait until the next int signing period, but I think that's going to be a tough sell for him to wait rather than getting money now and starting his minor league career.Regardless of how this turns out I think the Marlins should take advantage of their location and rebuilding situation as rydawg pointed out, and be more aggressive in the international market.
  2. That's good info. Thanks. It looks like 9 of the 12 brave prospects that were declared free agents have signed with other teams. I'm perplexed as to why the Marlins didn't nab at least one.
  3. Speaking of jeets, let's not forget his first deal that he made with the Yankees to get Cooper he gave up $250,000 worth of bonus pool space. Nice.
  4. You make a couple of good points but Martinez was a known quantity prior to the Dee Gordon deal. Texas just traded a player to get $350,000 more, and they already had over 2 million. I hope you're right but I just don't think he's going to wait.
  5. I'm sure Jeter cares, since his bonus depends on the profitability of the club...
  6. How much do the Marlins have now, and what will it take to sign Martinez ?
  7. Well, Gomez has alot more pop, which seems to be what teams are valuing the most these days. I wonder if the Marlins were in on Colby Rasmus. He just signed a minor league contract with Baltimore.
  8. I disagree. If they have plenty, they would not be talking about signing Martinez in the next signing period (july)...and there is also the unique current situation where the Braves IFA's have been granted free agency and are back on the market as part of the penalty.
  9. If that prohibits them from signing Martinez in this signing period, it will be a terrible move. For heaven sakes, if they are going to tear the thing down, why can't they be smart about it ?
  10. If the Marlins are so gung ho about aquiring prospects, why in the world did they give Seattle a million dollars of international pool space in the Dee Gordon trade ? Makes no sense.
  11. Yessir, I know how arbitration works. He filed for 3.55,(which you are right, is below his value) and lost. The point I'm trying to make is that the Marlins were probably Maybin's only shot at signing an MLB contract on a team where he will definitely start. It's a classic pillow deal and I think the Marlins overpaid.
  12. Only if there were other teams bidding for his services. He may not have had anymore leverage than JT going to arb, given the fact that ST is open and he batted .220 last year.
  13. Yea, Maybin seems like an overpay to me when you consider that Realmuto is only getting 2.9. Gomez may put up better numbers, but I think Maybin will be better in the clubhouse....so maybe that is part of it.
  14. I like this move. Maybin will be a great fit. This is best deal the Marlins have made so far, in the Sherman era ! Now lets get Pablo Martinez.
  15. I disagree. the marlins drew 3 million their first year before undergoing teardown after teardown, with each one eroding the trust and support with the fans. There are worse things than keeping the Marlin's all-time HR leader to be the franchise cornerstone, even if he is overpaid.
  16. I realize that, just using his name as majority owner. I thought that debt was reduced from 400 to 100 million after the sale ?
  17. I'm not a financial guy, but if the value of the team is listed at 940 million and Sherman paid 1.2, it seems like he left nearly all of Stanton's contract on the table.
  18. I'm sorry that you feel that way. Bruce Sherman is a corporate raider, all his moves so far are consistent with his modus operandi. He buys companies, guts for a profit and moves on. Check out what he did with Knight Ridder.
  19. Let's not mince words, sport. You will take clearly misremembering over sheer stupidity.
  20. You got me dude, anyone who can clearly misremember is out of my league.
  21. Interestingly, when interviewed about his motivation to buy the marlins, Sherman mentioned watching Mickey Mantle as an indelible print and then his second move is unloado Tommy John will do that...
  22. I have alot more questions than answers, but i think Jose Fernandez meant alot more to the Marlins ( and attendance), than we can quantify.
  23. When every move discounts the value of fan support, it makes you wonder whether the intent is to boil the fanbase down to logo lovers and farm fluffers, before they say attendance is atrocious, we have to move.
  24. No one is forcing you, just like no one was forcing Sherman to overpay for the value of the team... in excess of the amount on Stanton's contract.
