  1. Wow haven't been to this site in years, but had to check out what yall were saying.. Guys I know he is a great player, but long-term this is a bad move for the Marlins. Do we really want to be paying this guy $20/year when he's 38-41 years old? Obviously, the DH isn't an option and I just don't see how he can hold up that long. Yes, he would be a big name for the new stadium along with Bell and Reyes, but the no-trade clause makes this a bad deal for the Fish. Marlins would be a lot smarter spending the money elsewhere on multiple players. We dont know what Loria's ceiling is. As long as he is willing to pay for the parts we need to win, who cares how much they make. Shoot, pay them all $20 million, I dont care. We can speculate that this is costing us pieces elsewhere, but in my opinion, it is riskier to sign a pitcher long term than a position player. Right now, the big name pitchers want longer deals than we're willing to give them. All that being said, we still may get them too...nobody knows the salary ceiling. little off the subject i am worried that since marlins are Not giving no trade clause that come 2 3 years from now they dismantle the team:( i just hope they give pujols a no trade clause just to know for sure that they wont trade him. I wouldnt be concerned about them dismantling the team anytime soon. The ntc is more of a sense of security for the Marlins. You dont plan to use it, but just in case something were to happen and they cant afford him, they could get rid of him without accruing 20-25 million in debt every year. I guess, to put it in perspective, think about a direct tv contract. Theyre expensive as hell, but you think you can afford it. You're hours get cut at work, so now the contract becomes a burden on your wallet. Rather than cancelling it(trading Pujols) you are force to pay the cancellation fee (cutting him) or you can stick it out for the remainder of the contract, and just deal with the expense. \ Wait what? The purpose of a no-trade clause in a contract is to protect the player, and have a promise by management not to trade him. It hurts the Marlins because they would be forced to pay the guy $20 mil/year even at the age of 38-41 Needless to say even if there wasn't a no-trade clause, it's doubtful even a big-market team would want a 38 yr old Pujols without the Marlins having to take a significant cut of the contract

I hear what you are saying, but I think Loria is willing to spend all this cash because he believes the new players along with the new stadium will bring in a ton of revenue. I hate to say it, but after 3 years, I'm not sure the attendance is going to be as great as he believes it will be long-term. I realize Loria is an extremely wealth man, but hes not going to continually want to shell out this type of cash if it doesn't get results, or the attendance is just average. The smarter move in my opinion is signing Fielder to a 5-6 year deal and try to improve the pitching.

  4. Here are the reason's why i think we should sign him. 1. This team would become so dangerous (offensively) Teams would be scared of this lineup. (more than w/ Manny) He would bat Cleanup and Cantu will only see strikes. 2. Would not cost us anything 3. He's not worst then Manny or Willingham defensively. 4. You can Platoon him w/ Willingham/ 3 games or 4 games for Barry and 3 or 4 games for Willy. 5. He would sell tickets (all the money hungry people would want to catch a HR just to sell it) 6. Another Lefty Bat that would make it 4 Righties and 4 Lefties possibly in 1 game. Stats. 2006. Avg. 270 Slg. 545 OBP .454 (something Marlins don't do) HR. 26 Rbi's 77 BB. 115 (130 games) 2007. Avg. 276 Slg. 565 OBP .480 HR. 28 Rbi's 66 BB. 132 (126 games) Barry Can still hit and would be fresh. Please do not give me the steroids excuse. Especially those of you who want Sheffield Back and those that don't mind Lo duca, Peittite, Tejada and so on. If you wanted Manny why not Barry? Barry said he would play for the minimum. His trial is in spring and won't hurt us this season. I think if you ask all the players they would love to have him. And He can teach these guys a couple of things to help them. Also you have not heard of guys that say that Barry is a bad teammate (maybe Kent) he just does not get a long w/ the media. Good thing the media here sucks and we don't like them anyways. Hanley ? Jeremy (L) Cantu ? Bonds (L) Uggla ? Jake (L) Ross ? Baker (L) Pitcher What do you have to lose. These 5 pitchers are pitching too good for us to blow games b/c we can't score. No Thanks. You have some nice reasons..but to compare what Manny is right now to what Bonds would be right now is a little ridiculous. There's a reason why EVERY team in MLB passed on him in the off-season. Plus, when was the last time Barry Bonds played baseball?!
  5. Great post and I've been saying this all year long. National people ( like ESPN) look at the Overall Stats and just go on that, which is obviously ridiculous. If we include the 3 weeks before the trade deadline, anyone who REALLY knows baseball and the Florida Marlins knows that the Florida Marlins had the best mid-season "acquisitions." in MLB by far. Even with not getting Manny Ramirez. What other team in baseball can say that during the second half of the season, they brought in 3 YOUNG STARTING pitchers who could quite possibly be the best in the rotation. (I know Nolasco has been awesome, but JJ, Anibal, and Volstad are legit)...Along with that, the Florida Marlins also filled their biggest need, which was help in the bullpen against lefties, which is esp. important with all the lefties in the NL East. The Marlins have the most powerful offense in baseball and soon people may be saying they have the best starting rotation in baseball as well...Thats a pretty nice recipe for success and that be saying, makes me wonder by "Florida Marlins fans" said the fish didn't do "enough" during the regular season to make this team better..What a joke. "The Marlins have the most powerful offense in baseball" Huh? Maybe by HR alone... "best starting rotation in baseball as well" This is when I know your a true delusional team homer. "the fish didn't do "enough" during the regular season to make this team better" They didn't, our pitchers just recover from surgery. Don't post if you ddon't know what you are talking about. Wow, Im speechless after the post you just wrote. So lets break this down: 1."The Marlins have the most powerful offense in baseball" Huh? Maybe by HR alone... - Do you see that word that's after most and before offense? It rhymes with shower? There ya go POWER. Of course it is substantial to say the Marlins are the most powerful offense in baseball! I didn't say consistent, I didn't say clutch, hell I didn't even say overall, I said the most POWERFUL offense. That being said, the most obvious proof of that statement is the enormous amount of homeruns the team has been hitting. The Florida Marlins are the best in the league in hitting homers, and fifth in the National League in Total Bases hit. What more proof do you want to show the Florida Marlins have the most powerful offense in baseball? Are you sure YOU know what you are talking about? 2. "best starting rotation in baseball as well" This is when I know your a true delusional team homer. - Do you work for the media? Because you did a great job in cropping my quote to fit your argument. I said, "and soon people may be saying they have the best starting rotation in baseball as well." I bolded the first part of my quote because obviously you did not see it the first time you read it. You once again misread my quote. I didn't say the Florida Marlins have the best rotation in baseball. I said that baseball scouts and "experts" soon may say we have the best rotation in baseball. Two completely different statements. Im not saying the rotation is the best now, but in a month with more starts under their belt and the team hopefully deep in the playoff chase, they COULD be. That to me is not a "homer" statement when you look at the talent and youth on the roster. 3. "the fish didn't do "enough" during the regular season to make this team better" They didn't, our pitchers just recover from surgery. - Granted the Florida Marlins technically just "waited" for Johnson and Anibal to come back, but they did make the call to bring up Volstad and helped out the bullpen. Sure most of these moves were made from within the organization, but it still contradicts what many say in that the Florida Marlins haven't made their team better from the start of the season. The Florida Marlins have vastly improved their roster from the regular season, one can only image in what position this team would be in if they had had the likes of Chris Volstad, Josh Johnson, and Anibal Sanchez in the rotation for the entire season. Don't post if you don't know what you are talking about. - Well this is just great. Even though baseball has been apart of my life since the day I was born, some poster on the Internet who doesn't know the meaning of "power" and has comprehension problems is now going to tell ME I have no idea what I am talking about. HAH! I bet you were one of the Florida Marlin "fans" bashing the team the day after Manny was traded to L.A....Saying the Florida Marlins front office made a horrible decision, even though the only information you had learned of the deal was through the 790 The Ticket update guy, and a few rumor briefs from rotoworld.com.... You're hilarious.

  7. I will admit Team Chemistry is probably an over-rated concept. Yet to totally ignore it like some of you are doing is pretty ridiculous. Especially now on ESPN they are reporting Red Sox players decided Manny HAD to be traded. As I said in my previous artcle, do you really want a guy on your team whose former players basically voted off their team?
  8. the bottomline is if Boston gave up those top prospects in the LA why weren't they offer in the Florida deal? was this John Henry not willing to give Florida Manny or was there something to this 2 million dollar rumor that was reported today. While there was a financial dispute, what ended up hurting the original deal was what Florida had to give with Pitt. asking so much. It could have very well been that the Boston prospects that they wanted to give to the Fish weren't well thought of by the Marlins. Just because one team likes a prospect doesn't mean another team will, and I trust Beinfest's judgement. Look I know your trying to find something suspicious here, but its really not surprising this deal did not go through since there were so many moving parts.
  9. your telling me that the two minor leaguer that the LA gave up is better than Hermida and whatever minor leaguer the Marlins were offering? of course Im considering that Boston was offering the same two prospects in the Florida deal. something just doesn't add up. The two prospects that Boston gave up, Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen, are really good prospects... In fact Brandon Moss may end up being better than Hermida in the long run. I highly doubt those were the prospects that Boston was going to give to the Marlins or the Pirates as that deal would have most likely gone through. The Dodgers really barely gave anything in this trade so Boston probably had to offer these two "better" prospects than the ones they offered in the FLA/Pitt deal to finally get the deal done before the deadline.
  10. Does anyone know what actually caused the trade not to go through. I heard on the radio that Loria was asking for 2 million dollars more in cash and the Red Sox weren't willing to budge since they are already paying the rest of Mannys salary. Does anyone know if theres any truth to that. I find it hard to believe that Loria wouldn't pull the trigger on Manny for 2 freaking million dollars. I can tell you as a fact that Pittsburgh is what held up the deal. which really makes sense when you look at all the various reports out of Pitt. In fact, the Blue Jays had interest in Bay, but the phone call lasted 5 minutes because of the absurd asking price Pittsburgh wanted. Tampa Bay was also not able to get a deal done because of the prospects Pitt. wanted. To make a long story short, Pittsburgh wanted ANOTHER prospect, and because of this, The Red Sox called Florida and asked the Marlins for another prospect, most say they wanted Ryan Tucker, but I have also heard Stanton was a possibly the third guy as well. The Marlins simply did not want to give up all that talent for a rental and to mess with the chemistry of the team. Again, I'm happy and proud the Marlins stuck to their guns on this one.
  11. BTW as I wrote that the Marlins are up 7-0...Yeah we really need Manny's bat haha
  12. Brutal! You have the chance to win now. Gotta go for it. The chances that Manny Ramirez gives you of getting to the post season and beyond are a lot greater than the chances of Ryan Tucker turning into anything significant. This was a bad error on the marlins part. This would have made their lineup virtually unpitchable and much like shaq did for his teammates throughout his career, Manny would have made 1-6 so much better just with his presence. Problem is that this team keeps trying to stock pile and hold on to prospects but will never ever see any of them develop into a complete unit as far as 1-9 and a 5 man rotation. This team this year is the closest thing to being a winner that we may see for a while. If you think they are just going to come out next year and pickup where they left off please see the Colorado Rockies from last year to this year. One big problem with this ownership is they want everything given to them. The stadium deal is just an example, it could have been done a few years ago but they kept holding out cause they felt they deserved more. They always want to feel like they got one up on someone. Just like today when the deal got nixed cause they wanted an extra 2 million on top of Manny's salary. Give me a break. This team wont win unless we see another miracle season like we did in 03 because our ownership is not willing to give anything up or pay for a commodity. In a nutshell, we did not get Manny Ramirez because our front office would rather hold onto a potential 3rd or 4th starter in a few years when they win 75 games and begged for 2 million dollars that is basically a painting for Jeffrey Loria. I guess that is the price you pay when an art dealer is your owner. Couple of issues with your post: First off the Manny deal is not similar to the Shaq Deal...The only similarities is that both are well known players. Without getting too much into the Miami Heat, the Miami Heat largely won the championship because of Dwayne Wade being MJ like. Yes Shaq helped, but Dwayne won a championship for the Miami Heat in one of the most dominating perfomances in the Finals ,ever. With Baseball, there are many more aspects that would be out of Manny's control. Starting Pitching, weakness in the bullpen, susceptible infield defense, etc.. Also I find it ironic that your having issues with how the Marlins are winning after they have won 2 World Series and won one less than 5 years ago. The Marlins in 2003 finished 20 games above .500 and were a much more legit. post season team than this team. They had arguably the best defensive infield ever, great on base guys, clutch hitting, and superior pitching. This ballclub doesn't have any of that and bringing in Manny Ramirez would also solve a few issues. Lets not forget, this team is only a few games above .500, yes they are close to first place, but if they were in the Central, the Marlins would be less of a story. Finally as I said before, the 2 million was not the reason this trade died. The last thing Boston is worried about is spending another 2 million. The Marlins were simply not going to give up solid prospects for a questionable, 2 month rental. And quite frankly, how can you argue against them. Sure the Marlins lack in some areas, but they are arguably the best in MLB in acquiring talent, developing it, and knowing which pieces to keep and get rid of.
  13. Ok, here's a few things. Manny Ramirez is a significant force on any team, and could have easily provided a VERY significant boost in the race for the NL east, even if it cost some defense. And further more, Manny makes sense in the marlins, considering this will be his last 2 months before being a free agent, so he'll be more motivated to produce big numbers. Also considering that for all the slugging the marlins may already have, what they lack is reliable bat they can depend on to send base runners home without a HR (not counting cantu). However, the fact is, for a 2 month rental, Ramirez really isnt worth that many prospects, and he alone isn't the solution for the marlins. and it seems the team is starting to score runs without hitting the ball 350+ ft. What we really needed was a catcher. and can someone please take jacobs! cantu at 1st and mcpherson at 3rd is clearly a better solution. Jacobs needs to learn that there's a glove at the end of his hand if he wants to continue to play on this team, not to mention how to have consistent at bats. I don't get why people say this about Manny going to Miami so he can try to get a big contract. If Manny indeed wanted that 100 mil contract that he wants, why would he be doing the things hes doing in Boston right now? If Manny was all about the money, why would he take 6 seconds to go up the first base line? Why would he be making himself look like a bad teammate with saying the RedSox don't deserve him? I know Manny isn't the brightest guy in the world, but hes making himself look very unattractive to teams right now. If this is what he does whens hes in his contract year, Id hate to see what he does during a normal year.
  14. I do some stuff for the Marlins on various sporting news sites and thought I would put this up here as well: Manny Ramirez is no doubt one of the "sexier" names as far as names go in MLB since when one thinks of him, they think of his 40+ homerun, 100+ RBI, .300 AVG seasons, yet was Manny REALLY a good fit for the Marlins? Not really. There's no doubt it would have gathered increase interest in the Marlins, and the Marlins would have been "more fun" to watch, but those are reasons that Admin Beinfest was not willing to use to get rid of Hermida and 3 good prospects, and good for him. The Manny Ramirez deal was a "cosmetic deal." One that makes the Marlins look good, but barely makes them a better POST-SEASON team. For starters Manny Ramirez is 36 years old and is gone after this season. Yes the compensation draft picks would have been a nice addition to pick up as well, and Hermida may be gone next year, but Manny would barely improve the Marlins in the Post-Season. The Florida Marlins would have been an even worse defensive team, and even more of a right-handed dominated lineup. The Marlins would have ran into trouble with any right-handed specialist, which plenty of REAL playoff caliber teams have, and you always have to take in the "Manny being Manny" shenanigans that would have likely happened in Miami, a town where he would probably get away with more than Boston. Consider this: Boston was basically willing to PAY the Marlins to get rid of him, and in the final trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Red Sox will not only pay Manny's Salary, but also give the Pirates a very promising outfielder in Brandon Moss (a guy who will probably we much better than Jeremy Hermida of the Marlins) and another nice prospect in Craig Hansen who has a strong arm with his fastball and slider. It almost unbelievable to think Boston, a team deep in the chase of the postseason, would WANT to trade away Manny and two solid prospects just to basically get rid of the guy. Jason Bay is no doubt a nice a player, and an All Star player, but if a post season chasing team is wanting to get rid of their best hitter like that, do you REALLY want that on your team? And what makes any Marlins fan think the same wont be felt my the Marlin's front office by the end of the year? In the end, the Marlins stuck to their guns, and give them credit for that. I think when you take a look from a realistic perspective, the Marlins are a nice team above .500 record wise, but aren't in the league of the Cubs, Cards, White Sox, or the Angels and the addition of Manny for 2 months wouldn't have changed that. The Marlins still lack a solid defense (which would have been worse with roll on top of the ball Manny), and while pitching was a problem in the first half, that area will most likely be greatly improved in this final run at the playoffs. Sure the Marlins can get into the playoffs, but only through the NL East, and only if the Marlins get that "magic feel" like they did in 2003 and are able to get on a roll. In conclusion, the Marlins made the right move. Don't buy what some "sources" are saying that the Marlins wanted another 2 million dollars. Trust me, that's not what held up this deal. From a financial perspective it makes no sense. The Marlins would have gained that back in Manny interest alone. The Pirates simply were asking too much and Admin Beinfest, arguably the best GM in baseball, wasn't going to get pushed around to rent a good, but questionable player. The Marlins keep this team together, that has FAR exceeded its expectations, and continue on their chase for the post-season. The Florida Marlins WILL improve themselves since they have possibly 3 very solid starting pitchers they didn't have earlier in the year, and Rhodes is a nice boost to the pen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As far as the Rhodes trade, its a solid move by the Marlins. You bring in a LEFTY reliever who the Marlins desperately needed for a above average reliever. Also who knows how Anibal does, but Anibal Sanchez is almost like picking up a new player since he hasn't even pitched for the Marlins this year. Bring in those two arms and you definitely make this team more post-season friendly. I would much rather have Sanchez, Volstad, Olsen, Johnson, Nolasco rotation than Manny any day. On a side note: Lets cheer on the players we have and not boo the the guys we don't...
  15. The Marlins are notorious for trading away talent! And guys like Ryan Tucker and Joe Nelson aren?t going to fix our bullpen. Tucker pitched only ONE game in his life and Nelson cant keep a job in the bigs. Lets take a team like the Rockies whos? outfield has collectively hit only 12 home runs all year, But theyre bullpen is stacked compaired to us. whats to say we cant get one of the several veterans they got in exchange for a Willinghan or Hermida. they need future talent and we need talent right now. How about a future talent like Hermida in exchange for Glendon Rusch from the Rockies. He?s a veteran that can start and come outa the bullpen plus he?s a lefty and the fish really need a lefty outa the bullpen. Hermida for a has been who is 1-3 with an ERA over 7? No thank you The Marlins are notorious for trading AWAY talent???? I think the opposite is true...
