Posted April 28, 200420 yr Not sure, who else from the Dominican Republic has played 2nd base. But if my memory serves me well, he should be the best 2nd base ever from that country. anyone has different information?
April 28, 200420 yr Julio Franco played a bunch of games at 2B Damaso Garcia had some good years with Toronto, and hit .283 for his career with 1108 hits and 203 steals. Juan Samuel hit 161 HRs, stole 396 bases, and had 1578 hits in his career. Going back further, Julian Javier was a fine 2B for the Cardinals for many years, considering he played in a pitchers era.
April 28, 200420 yr Author Thanks for the info Hopefuly Castillo continues to perform and retire as one or the best

April 28, 200420 yr I'd say Castillo is better than all those guys except maybe Samuel. Even with Samuel's .260 average and .315 OBP, it's hard to beat that combination of power and speed. Samuel's lifetime OPS was .735 with 396 steals. Luis' is .720 and has stolen "only" 250 bases before this season and I don't think he's going to get to 396.

I wouldn't be too sure about what? All I said is that Samuel may be better than Castillo now. I didn't say anything about hits or runs or how Castillo's career will end up, except that I don't think he'll get to 396 SBs. Castillo stole 21 bases last year and is on pace for about 25 this year. I think Castillo's 50 SB days are behind him. By the time Castillo retires, I'd expect him to have 2000 or so hits and I think he'd be the best Dominican born 2B ever (depending what Soriano does and how soon he ends up in the OF). Castillo may even be better by now. I don't remember much about Juan Samuel's defensive ability except for a vague feeling that it wasn't real good. I remember something about the Mets trying to make a CF out of him after they traded Dykstra for him.
April 28, 200420 yr didnt julio franco play second for some 10 years? Franco came up as a SS and it looks like he was a regular 2B for four years. He's played 663 games at 2B in his career (715 at SS, 336 as DH, 319 as 1B, 4 as OF, and 2 at 3B, all going into this season).
