Player Salary...

well the dugoutdollars link looked like it listed the 40-man roster plus a few others.

when we (like 10 diff posters on here) tallied it up it, the total was about $52-$53 for the big league roster. pb's right, i'm sure they're planning on spending a few more mill, but i'll be pretty disappointed if loria isn't willing to exceed last year's payroll by a fair amount after winning the WS.

The difference is Conine's contract which others just use the average while DD uses the restructured deal. And about 2 million from DD are minor leaguers on our 40-man roster making major league dough.

So, the estimate that you should use is $58M?

Why are people afraid to throw out what they think here? Like we are on CSpan or something. I dont care if you or I are wrong, I just want to work towards the Truth here. :D

Even at $58M, the Marlins could squeeze $2-3M in addition to make the run. I cant remember how much Uggi and Conine added last season to our payroll, but I would think that figure to hold up.

If we do make a move, it wont happen until after the ASB in my opinion.

Pissed off that people are demanding more and more.

We went through this before the season. And we all agreed that Beinfest was likely keeping some space available for future moves.

I would hardly say we ALL agree. I lean that way myself, but I also think the Marlins had no choice. We sent Redman and Encarnacion away for that reason. But Lee I think was dealt because we had to free up money to keep Fudge around. We signed Castillo (a mistake in my opinion, but not a bad one - good for PR and for team identity) and Fudge stayed to his ridiculous demands. So we have some extra money if the right situation comes along (and no, I dont think it will be Beltran).

Ugy didn't add as much to the payroll, because if I remember correctly when he came over part of the stipulation was that Texas picked up a nice chunk of his remaining contract.

Also, I disagree with the moves coming after ASB. Maybe not everything will be done before because teams don't usually give up hope before the break, however we got a good result when we nabbed Ugy before the break last season and I wouldn't be surprised for Admin to make a big name move before the break so that he doesn't have to pay as much and can make little but effective moves later on.

It all depends on when it all comes together.

Isn't Fox being paid by insurance already?

the marlins do not insure players. previous owners did, this group doesn't.

fox and oliver will be paid regardless of whether they stay, get sent down or let go.

fox would never "retire" because that is the only circumstance where the marlins wouldn't be responsible to pay him. he'll stay on the DL for the season before he'll retire.

after a team wins a world series, they always increase payroll the following year.

the two exceptions in recent history? the 97 marlins and 2003 marlins.

not increasing the payroll over last year's figure is inexcusable in my book.

They did increase it by $5M.

And for the revenue they generate the payroll should be $30M. Be lucky with that Loria is willing to invest twice that figure.

They did increase it by $5M.

youre not paying attention. look at your own link. the "payroll" that the blogger tabulated is for 40+ players, and you're comparing that to last year's big league team.

our current payroll of $52-53M is less than last year's, and it sure aint an increase.

Did you forget the articles this offseason? This board's obsession with the number 49 (60 - Hampton/Pudge)? Loria to set a payroll this offseason and it was eventually revealed to be $60M.

The thing is Beinfest has yet to use all of it. Why, whether he did not have a plan after Pudge left and/or he's leaving some available for future acquisitions, should be the question unless you're willing to chip in.

edit: you're right, sorry for being retarded :thumbup

Really? Well, Beinfest spent more than he should have because the current payroll without Hampton and Pudge is much larger than $39M. About 3 million using the opening day figures. About 5 million if you include minor league callups and bonuses already earned by Mordi and Pierre. Add in additional $2M depending on how you view the restructuring of Conine's contract. And that's pretty close to $46M without factoring in the $11M for Pudge and Hampton.

i'm not going to be childish in response, but

... edit: you were correct about the number 49 + 11 = 60 total. my apologies for the inaccurate statement.

however, last year's payroll was roughly $63/$64 million. just add 10 to all the numbers and the point is the same.

That you're accusing Loria as being cheap for being $4-6M under target when he is spending about $30M more than what a team of our revenue should is beyond ridiculous.

pardon me, you are correct about the 49 + 11 = 60. my apologies, rferry.

what i originally meant to say was the high estimation for our payroll was $75 million, the middle was 70, and the low was $65 million. our payroll in 2003 was roughly $63/64 million.

you are correct, all my numbers were off by $10 million, but my point is the same. our payroll this year was not an increase from last year's, and it was a bit lower than the lowest estimate imagined.

IIRC the end payroll was about $63M last year and I think that was rather generous considering we were only paying Conine and Urbina for a combined 4 months.

Yeah, I was hoping it'd be at $65M, and I think it would have been if Pudge or Vlad signed (although some suspect the club offered neither a contract), but alas we're doing well with a small payroll and Loria has shown he's willing to add more for the stretch run.
